2
Supermileage Vehicle
  • Supermileage vehicles are best known for the
    competitions held around the world.
  • Mainly intended for those that are interested in
    science and technology.
  • This RD project hopes to increase awareness of
    fuel efficiency.

3
What They Are
  • Supermileage vehicles are single manned vehicles
that are intended to travel at very high mpg.
  • The vehicle is basically a small version of a
    go-kart.
  • The engines used are four cylinder engines that
    can usually be donated.

4
What to Consider
  • When building any type of vehicle one needs to
make sure they cover all 6 subsystems of
    transportation.

5
Subsystems
  • Structure
  • The vehicle needs to as lightweight as possible.
  • Aerodynamics also plays a big role.
  • Propulsion
  • Briggs Stratton engine.
  • Suspension
  • Mechanical suspension system.
  • Pneumatic.

6
Cont.
  • Guidance
  • A safe steering system.
  • Someone that can safely drive.
  • Control
  • Track, competition.
  • Brake system to safely come to a halt.
  • Support
  • Seatbelt, safety harnesses, helmets.

7
Competition
  • There are competitions all over the US.
  • Made available for students at the collegiate
level as well as high school.
  • Most competitions have a set of rules to follow.

8
In the Classroom
  • This type of project will have to be for upper
    level high school students.
  • There will have to be someone that can drive a
    car safely.
  • This project would be best if completed as a
    class project.
  • Would be great in extra-curricular clubs.

9
Cont.
  • With is a great way to incorporate science and
    technology.
  • Can go into car history. (Henry Ford)
  • Will have to create a testing course.
  • Will have to emphasize on safety.
