Title: Greener modelling on greener computers
1Greener modelling on greener computers
Dr. Julian Dean
Sheffield centre of magnetic materials and
devices Working with very PC
Professors T. Schrefl J. Harding
Drs C.L. Freeman A. Goncharov G. Hrkac
Phd students S. Bance M.A. Bashir N. M. Saiden
2What we do
Micro magnetic modelling of magnetic materials
Magnetic simulations (nano wires, hard drives,
magnetic materials)
Atomistic and quantum mechanic simulations
Structural analysis for sensors
We require lots of processors and memory
constantly running
3What we have now
Clustervision
Departmental computer cluster (18 nodes, dual
processor, dual core with 16 Gb memory each) 72
processors
Plus -
1 cluster of 10 various different PCs running
Linux, mainly Viglen - 40 processors
Housed in a cooled room for 2 cluster racks of 20
nodes
1 PC per student and staff 11 Pcs
4Upgrades why are we concerned
A simple comparison for power and price
Greener alternative (provided by Very-pc) VeryPC
Janus II
Typical Computer HP DL360G5
2 servers 1500 (each) (2 x quad core) 8
processors
1 servers 3800 (each) (2 x quad core) - 8
processors
Cost
On 0 Load (per node)
162 W
81 W
On 100 Load (per node)
287 W
143.5 W
5Upgrades - why
If we assume we run at average 80 utilization,
with a PUE of 2 (conservative A/C consumption
estimate), 24/365
3 year projection (_at_ 0.14/kwh)
Greener alternative (Very-PC) VeryPC Janus II
Typical Computer 2 x HP DL360G5
4459
1927
Saving 600 per year
CO2 Saved over 3 years per unit Approx 9
Tons 1.25 Range Rover Sports or 215 average
Trees.
6Upgrades reasons
Reduces the cooling required saves university
space
Makes us feel better Raises university profile
What we would like
More support and advertisement of such systems
Incentive for going green gt it would cost 20
more in some cases to go green, but we are saving
universities money. A subsidised policy would be
beneficial for both sides.
