6Where Do I Begin?
- Packaging
- Paper
- Glass
- Consumables
- Energy
- Water
7Benchmark 1
- Paper - 7 reams of paper/person/year
- Waste - 200 kg waste paper/person/year
- Recycling - 60-70 recycling rate for paper,
card, glass, toner, cans - Water - 7700 litres (7.7 m3) /person/year
8Benchmark 2
- Electricity - 33kWh/m2 small office
- 54kWh/m2 naturally ventilated open plan
- 128kWh/m2 air conditioned open plan
- 234 kWh/m2 headquarters
- Typical practice 2/3 higher electricity use
9Think Packaging..?
- Can packaging be reduced or eliminated?
- Can the packaging received from suppliers be
re-used? - Can you use waste from other parts of the
business, e.g. shredded paper from office waste,
for infill to packaging? - Draw a diagram of the packaging cycle and
identify areas for re-usable packaging - Discuss with your suppliers whetherincoming
packaging can bereturned
10Environmentally FriendlyPackaging Should Be-
- Adequate to protect the goods and materials
supplied, whilst avoiding over packaging - Crates, pallets and, if feasible, boxes and
cartons should be reused - Cushioning and other forms of packaging which are
not reusable should be recycled
11Paper
- For every tonne of paper recycled - savings
- 17 trees spared
- 2000 litres of water saved
- 4200 KWh less electricity (six months for house)
- 9 kg of carbon dioxide
12Glass
- It takes around 3000 to 4000 bottles and jars to
make 1 tonne of glass - After transport and processing 315 kg of CO2 is
saved per tonne of glass melted
Recycling two bottles saves enough energy to boil
five cups of tea
13Water Keep Alert Look for
- Leaks
- Inappropriate use
- Water savings
- Tariff
14Water Saving Devices Practices
- Cistern volume adjusters
- Cistern dam
- Dual flush
- Waterless toilets/urinals
15Water Saving Devices Practices
16Water Saving Devices Practices
- Automatic taps
- Spray taps
17University
- This Case Study describes how the University of
Glasgow has saved nearly 500,000 in the ten
years since beginning a long-term water
minimisation campaign. - Cumulative water/effluent savings of over 329,700
m3 have been achieved through right sizing meters
to reduce fixed charges and reducing water use by
domestic applications, science departments and
building services.
18Organise An Amnesty Day
- Why - to raise environmental awareness
- Reduces the volumes of unwanted items throughout
the facility - At the Scottish Office Victoria Quay the
following was collected
- 775 ring binders
- 2.4 tonnes waste paper
- 16 dictaphones
- 7 telephones
- 1 Epson printer
- 4 boxes envelopes
- 2 boxes acetates
- 96 desk trays
- 4 calculators
- 8 boxes filing pockets
- 10 toner cartridges
- 1 monitor and keyboard
- 6 boxes computer paper
- 4 reams coloured paper
- 110 boxes of leaflets / brochures / paper
- Various stationery items such as staples, elastic
bands, etc
These items were then all disposed of correctly
they probably would have been landfilled otherwise
