3Introduction
I came to the Hess School in December of 1999as
a Learning Resource teacher. My months here
have been exasperating, as well as fulfilling. I
have had the opportunity to work closely with a
most courteous and professional staff who were
very willing to lend a hand (or a shoulder) and
some I now call my friends. I have developed a
great rapport with my students and look forward
to watching them grow, academically and
socially. As a staff member, I took full
advantage of the educational technology training
available through the ETTC. My newly
acquired skills have allowed for more interesting
lesson plans as well as time efficient
techniques. This entire portfolio was created
using PowerPoint - something I first learned of 6
months ago!
4Character Education
Each month a new trait is introduced to the
entire class during Student of the Month
assemblies. Students strive throughout the
month to demonstrate these character building
traits. These traits are also incorporated into
the teachers lesson plans via special
activities and discussions. Here are some
examples from this school year.

5Trustworthy
Students created hearts with construction paper
and wrote inside examples of when they had proven
to be trustworthy. The hearts provided a very
nice bulletin board display.

9Behavior Plans
Several behavior modifications were necessary
through- out the year. Changes were made as
needs emerged. Beginning with individual
point sheets based on a token economy, the
program slowly developed into a very visual point
system with clearly established rules and
consequences. Each student had his or her own car
which moved down the road whenever a traffic
violation occurred. After 7 traffic tickets the
student would be given a referral. This
program was extremely effective and kept the
number of referrals down to 4 for the
year!!! Contd
10Behavior Plans contd
Students who earned a predetermined amount
of points for the week earned participation in
special activities such as computer time,
games, teachers chair, special treats, etc.

11Read Across America
Students told the story of The Wizard of Oz for
the schools door decorating contest. Wow! We
had so much fun and the final project was
beautiful!

12Technology in the Classroom
My students and I owe a great deal of our
academic successes to the accessibility of
technology. PowerPoint presentations,
educational CD ROM's, the Internet, and MS
office programs have all had their place in
the classroom.
Math for the Real World was a real hit with the
6th grade. This real-life problem solving program
allowed these students to use critical thinking
skills while making their own music video!

13My favorite web sites.
My knowledge of technology has soared this
year! Thanks to the ETTC I was able to take my
basic computer skills and apply them to
more advanced technologies. The Internet has
become my most valuable resource. These are
some of my favorites
