Title: The Devils Arithmetic By:Jane Yolen

1
The Devils Arithmetic By Jane Yolen
Jewish children behind a fence at a Concentration
Camp.
2
Setting
  • The story is set in World War II, during the
    Holocaust.
  • The author used time travel to take a modern day
    girl back to the Holocaust.
  • The authors writing was easy to understand. She
used facts about the Holocaust in her own
    descriptions.

3
Event 1
  • The Nazis took the different Jewish families
from their homes and put them into cattle cars.
The events were real but the families named in
    the book were fictional.

4
Event 2
  • The second event is about all the evil described
in the book. Some of the evil things that
happened were the cattle cars people were piled
into, the shaving of heads, the tattooing of
numbers, the separation of families in the
concentration camps, and much more. All these
events happened in different sections of the
book, but they were all true.

Personal Response
  • The book was good even though it was sad.
  • I liked the story because the author used the
facts of the Holocaust with a fictional character
to make the story seem real to me.
  • The bad things that happened to the Jews was what
    I disliked the most.
  • I would recommend the book to others because it
showed how bad World War II was for the Jewish
    people.
  • Even though I knew the Jews suffered, until I
read the book I didnt know it was that horrible.
Hitler believed that if you were Caucasian with
blonde hair and blue eyes you were better than
    everybody else.
