2Bones and the skeleton
- Inside our bodies is a skeleton. It has 3
main jobs - It helps us to move
- It protects our internal organs e.g. the ribs
protect the heart and lungs - It supports us e.g. back bone holds the body up!
- OTHER FACTS
- Calcium makes bones stronger
- 3 WAYS THAT BONES ARE JOINED
- Swivel joints e.g. hips and shoulders
- Hinge joints e.g. elbow and knees
- Sliding joints e.g. backbone

3Muscles
Our muscles and joints allow us to move. They
work in pairs. When one gets longer and contracts
the other gets shorter and relaxes.
- We have more than 600 muscles in the body
- Muscles help us to move
- The heart is made of the type of muscle called
cardiac muscle

4THE HEART
The heart is about the size of your fist. It is
located in your ribcage which is in your chest.
The heart pumps blood around the body. Veins take
blood to the heart and arteries take blood away
from the heart. The heart beats faster when
you exercise because you use more energy and
oxygen. It beats about 150 times a minute when
you exercise. When a woman is not exercising, her
heart beats about 80 times per minute. When a man
is not exercising, his heart beats approximately
71 times per minute.
- The heart is made of cardiac muscle
- You can remember that the arteries take the blood
away from the heart because Away and
Arteries both begin in A!

5THE LUNGS
- Our lungs fuel us with oxygen
- They breathe in air then take out the oxygen and
pass it into the bloodstream where then it is
taken to the tissues and organs that need it to
work - Oxygen makes the process of respiration which
provides our cells with energy - A waste gas carbon dioxide is produced and
breathed out when we exhale without this needful
exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen our cells
would quickly die and the body would suffocate - Lungs breathe in between (8,000 and 9,000 litres)
of air each day

6THE LIVER
In the human body, the liver is found on more of
the right side of the ribcage (in your chest).
- The liver weighs approximately1.8 kilograms in
men and 1.3 kilograms in women - The liver is dark reddish brown in colour
- It is divided into 2 main parts (the smaller
part lobe on the left and the much bigger lobe
on the right - The liver has the job of removing harmful toxins
and taking out the poisonous substances in the
body

7ZINC
- Zinc is a mineral that is found in almost every
cell - It is found in many types of food, such as
oysters and red meat - One way that Zinc is used in the body is for the
healing of wounds - It is also used for cell growth and repair
This meal of red meat has the mineral zinc in it.

8THE BRAIN
The brain is located in the head and the skull
protects it from damage.
- The brain controls the whole body
- It even controls the processes that we dont
think about e.g. breathing and blinking. - The brain is a very important organ because it
controls EVERYTHING you say, do and think!

9THE STOMACH
The stomach is an organ for digestion. It is
located near the intestines. Almost all animals
have a stomach, including humans! The human
stomach looks muscular, elastic and like a
pear-shaped bag. It changes its size depending on
where it is and how much food is inside it. The
stomach is about 30.5 cm long and about 15.2 cm
wide at its widest point. In an adult the
stomachs capacity is about 0.94 litres. It holds
food and breaks it down (digests it ).

10THE KIDNEYS AND THE BLADDER
There are 2 kidneys on each side of the body. The
kidneys make the urine then it is carried to the
bladder. The bladder is like a balloon that holds
up to 500ml (3 cups) of urine. The 2 kidneys
help get rid of the waste products made in the
body. They also clean the blood. DID YOU KNOW YOU
COULD SURVIVE WITH ONLY 1 KIDNEY??!!

NOT SMELL IT.THIS CAN CAUSE LUNG CANCER AND
DIFFICULTY WITH BREATHING
