Title: SolarHydrogen Energy

1
Solar-Hydrogen Energy
2
Hydrogen the perfect fuel We Will Never Run Out
of Hydrogen
3
The Perfect Fuel
  • Water is split split by electricity, generated by
the sun into gaseous hydrogen and oxygen
  • hydrogen contains no carbon, therefore does not
release carbon dioxide (like fossil fuels and
    biomass fuels

4
The Perfect Fuel
  • when hydrogen burns it combines with oxygen gas
in the air and produces water vapor and some
nitrogen oxides-this vapor can serve again as the
source of hydrogen production-the cycle can be
    continued indefinitely.
  • Hydrogen is the most abundant fuel in the
universe, constituting 93 of all atoms but
    hydrogen gas is rare.

5
Harnessing Hydrogen
  • Break up water into Hydrogen and Oxygen gases
with electrical current-ideally from solar panels
  • hydrogen and oxygen merge in a fuel cell, forming
water and release energy as electricity

Why Hydrogen?
  • eliminate air and water pollution caused by use
    of fossil fuels, (oil spills)
  • reduce threat of global warming (CO2)
  • on oil exploration and eliminates dependence on
    Middle East
  • National Security, decrease wars over oil
  • no environmental scars
  • creates thousands of jobs
  • eliminate need for coal fired power plants and
let individuals produce most if not all of their
    energy.
  • Compatible with nature, inexhaustible

10
Why Not Hydrogen?
  • Requires energy and to produce hydrogen fuel
  • Difficult and expensive to store and transport

11
Hydrogen Future Act of 1996 Authorize hydrogen
research, development and demonstration programs
of the DOE. -lead to production, storage,
transport and industrial, residential,
transportation and utility.
12
Transportation
  • 520 million cars and trucks on the road
worldwide, all which burn gasoline or diesel
fuel, both of which are refined from oil, the
most limited and rapidly depleting fossil fuel.
  • Pure hydrogen can be burned in an internal
    combustion engine to power conventional
    automobiles.
  • Or hydrogen in a fuel cell can power an electric
    vehicle.

Progress
  • Companies with hydrogen fueled vehicles
  • Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mazda and Ballard Power
    Systems.
  • Ford and GM have also invested in hydrogen
    research

  • Hydrogen is the only clean burning,
    nonpolluting, non-greenhouse, inexhaustible fuel
there is, and is the only sure bet for the
    future. -Carlton Salter
