  • The person I have chosen is (drum roll) Mahalia
    Jackson! This person is the -as the people say-
    the greatest gospel singer who ever lived! Her
    astonishing voice and true devotion moved
    millions of people around the world!!

Background
  • Mahalia Jackson was born on October 26, 1911.
    Jackson was born in New Orleans, LA (Louisiana).
    Mahalia was the third child of John A. Jackson,
    who was a barber and preacher. Sadly, John died
    at the age of 25 when Mahalia was only 4 years
    old. Jackson was sent to live with her aunts
    house in 1916. The aunts name is Mahalia Duke
    Paul. Aunt Duke didnt allow secular music in her
    household, but Jacksons brother would sneak in
    some records. Although Jackson was young, she had
    an amazing voice and would sing hymns and
    old-time gospels around the house.

Accomplishments
  • Mahalia started to sing when she was only 4!! She
    sung at the Plymouth Rock Baptist church.
  • In the late 1920s, when Mahalia was 16 years of
    age, she moved to Chicago and became fond of
    work. But soon after, she found plenty of work
    singing solo at churches and funerals after
    joining the Greater Salem Baptist Church choir.
  • After singing with the Prince Johnson Singers,
    she began recording for Decca Records in 1937.
  • Mahalia performed in the Apollo Records from 1946
    to 1954.
  • In the 1950s, Mahalia's voice was heard on radio,
    television and concert halls around the whole
    world. Her shows were packed in Europe, and her
    audience very enthusiastic at the 1957 Newport
    Jazz Festival, at a special all-gospel program
    she requested.
  • Mahalia started her own Sunday night radio show
    on CBS in 1954.
  • Mahalia was in the Columbia Records from 1954 to
    1967.
  • She sang for President Dwight Eisenhower and at
    John F. Kennedy's inaugural ball in 1960.
  • Mahalia sang at a lot of Dr. King Jr.s rallies.
  • Mahalia also sung at Dr. Kings "I Have a Dream"
    speech at the March on Washington in 1963.
  • She also sang at Dr. King Jr.s funeral 5 years
    later.

Obstacles
  • The toughest time that Mahalia faced, was when
    she sung for the Decca Records in 1937 and the
    records did not sell as well as she expected.

Tributes
  • Mahalia Jackson cheered many people up. Although
    they never built any monuments or anything for
    Mahalia, she still lives in our hearts and minds,
    and her music will always cheer the sad faces of
    many people, into faces of joy, and happiness.

Conclusion
  • Mahalia changed the world by when the people were
    sad, her gospel singing would cheer people up.
  • Sadly, despite her doctors word, ordering her to
    slow down, Mahalia collasped and died with heart
    failure in Evergreen Park, Illinois in 1972.

    for all that you have done to cheer all men and
    women up in there time of sorrow.
