What is Classification?

• The act or method of distributing into a class or
  category according to characteristics also a
  class or category determined by characteristics

Decision Tree

• Hierarchical arrangement of agenda that predicts
  a classification or value.
• Unsupervised data-mining technique.
• Analyst sets up the computer program and provides
  the data to be evaluated and the decision tree in
  return produces the tree accordingly.
• Easy to understand and implement using the
  decision rules.

• College Applications.
• Job experiences.
• Loan for buying a car.
• Student Performance
• National security databases.
• Investment risk.
• Dating websites (eharmony.com, match.com)

Pros of Classification

• Better segregation of data.
• Target a specific market or niches.
• Improved analyzed data.
• Free of human bias
• Separate good/bad, necessary / unnecessary data

Cons of Classification

• Analyses differ in the degree to fit.
• Classification schemes often split up collections
  of related material. This can be partly overcome
  with good cross-references.
• Usually updated through formal processes by
  prearranged bodies
• Putting into action such a system across a
  society requires a cultural shift in the
  organization and attitudes. It is both an
  organization and a people issue.

Ethics Behind Classification

• Though classification seems appropriate to use in
  certain areas of our lives. One must ask
  questions about the ethics of using such a
  system.
• Is it fair to create a class within society where
  equality is preached?
• How effective can this system be if it reinforces
  negative social stereotypes?
• Are techniques like decision tree an easy way for
  organizations to hide its social/human bias?
