Wilderness Act of 1964
  • Assure that the population does not occupy and
    modify all areas of the country thereby leaving
    no land designated for preservation and
    protection in its natural condition.
  • Areas are designated by Congress
  • Development restrictions apply

Wild and Scenic River Systems
  • Rivers and streams, often located in national
    parks and refuge areas, that are identified for
    special measures designed to protect them in
    their present natural state.

Wild and Scenic Rivers
  • A wild river is one that is free-flowing,
    inaccessible, except by trail, has primitive
    shorelines and has unpolluted waters.
  • Scenic rivers, in contrast, must be free of
    impoundments, have largely primitive shore lines
    and be largely undeveloped.
  • Recreational river, in contrast, can be readily
    accessible by road, have some development and
    have undergone some diversion of their waters.

    prohibits the licensing of any dam, reservoir,
    water power facility or other project directly
    affecting a designated river.
