Purpose
  • This program was developed for soldiers and
    civilian employees at Fort Carson, to promote a
    healthy pregnancy outcome. It encourages a safe
    and healthy workplace environment.

Historical Background
  • AR 40-5 states that worksites will have a
    reproductive hazards program
  • Initial program was started in 1994
  • Program updated December 1997 in conjunction
    with the OB Educator
  • Multidisciplinary team used to explore options
    and provide recommendations

  • Explore options and offer recommendations on
    developing a program that identifies worksite
    risks, promotes a healthy pregnancy/ outcome and
    supports the organizations mission.

Recommendations
  • Visit every pregnant worker at her place of duty
  • Provide education to the worker and supervisor
  • Identify work limitations and accommodations for
    pregnant employee, i.e. altitude, rest breaks,
    fluid intake, ergonomics
  • Link employee to a pregnancy exercise program

  • Identify workplace hazards (physical and
    chemical)
  • Physical lifting, climbing, bending, reaching
  • Chemical diesel fumes, ventilation, asbestos,
    white out

Accomplishments
  • 100 of the 266 identified pregnant employees had
    worksite visits
  • Provided education for pregnant soldiers/civilian
    employees, peers and their supervisors
  • Developed a comprehensive data base for trending
    outcomes and patterns
  • Developed an education program Choices
    (available on Post) for young adults

Conclusion
  • Noted no significant adverse outcomes due to job

    pregnant workers, peers and their supervisors
  • Quarterly trending of statistical data will
    continue to monitor programs progression
