A little history
  • Last HEPiX meeting at TRIUMF April 10-12/1996
  • Alan Silvermans 18 pages of meeting notes
  • CERN had some 5TB of disk space
  • X-stations dominated (most labs)
  • IBM Mainframe CERNVM, still with 2300 users but
    was to be switched off in 3 months
  • Network migrating from bridged to routed
  • Desire to move to DFS due to AFS problems
  • Struggling with how to handle UNIX (operating)
    releases and dealing with vendor-supplied patched

A little more history
  • At the other sites
  • The big disk drives were the 9GB Seagates
  • Many sites were moving from VMS to UNIX
  • LINUX, including coming MP support, was being
    rolled out and pro/cons of open source debated
  • Problems with disk space management
  • Windows 3.11 was migrating to Windows NT
  • Mail service was moving from POP to IMAP
  • Tape standardization was a moving target
  • Many emerging choices on handling batch queues
    and providing user interfaces
