Introduction
  • The Faculty of Design is one of Australias
    premier design schools and is widely regarded for
    its industry focused undergraduate courses and
    high levels of applied research and postgraduate
    scholarship.
  • The Faculty is also known as the National
    Institute of Design and the National Institute
    for Design Research. It also supports the
    distinguished Swinburne School of Film and
    Television.

Communication Design
  • The Communication Design program produces
    designers with high creative and conceptual
    ability for careers in graphic design,
    advertising, publishing, publicity, print media
    and multimedia - wherever information is conveyed
    visually.

Industrial Design
  • The Industrial Design program produces designers
    of a wide range of consumer and industrial
    products from furniture, cars, sporting equipment
    and personal electronic devices to medical,
    transport and manufacturing equipment, any
    objects where social and technological change and
    the demand for innovation and improvement are
    constant.

Interior Design
  • Interior Design produces graduates with the
    conceptual processes, creative tools, management
    strategies and research skills for innovation in
    the areas of public environments (government
    agencies and institutions, theatres, cinemas,
    sporting venues, interpretation centres)
    commercial spaces (restaurants, offices, hotels,
    shops and airports), domestic interiors and
    exhibition design (trade shows, events and museum
    displays).

Multimedia Design
  • The Multimedia Design program prepares students
    to work with design for digital film production,
    the world wide web and computer interactive
    media.
  • The study of time-based sequence design provides
    students with expertise in animation, 3D
    modeling, digital video, audio media, and
    communication design for electronic media.

Industry Placement
  • Formally known as Industry Based Learning,
    Industry Placement (IP) is a unique and important
    component of the undergraduate programs in the
    Faculty of Design. Students are matched with an
    appropriate company according to their skills and
    interests.
  • Postgraduate students can gain vital industry
    experience working in the Design Centre, the
    Facultys in-house design consultancy.

Industry Placement
  • International students are eligible for IP
    because it is a mandatory component of the
    Honours program.
  • Students must achieve Credit average grades in
    their second year of study and complete a
    successful interview to be eligible for IP.
  • Students are often paid a stipend during their
    IP.
  • Students work for four days in Industry and are
    required to study one module at University on the
    remaining day.

The Design Centre
  • The Design Centre is an professional consultancy
    program conducted by the Faculty of Design
    providing industry experience for honours and
    postgraduate students. It provides students with
    real industry projects under the guidance and
    management of experienced designers. The Design
    Centre strives for excellence in all aspects of
    design, design management and design research in
    communication, industrial and multimedia design.

  • Australian and International students are
    eligible for choosing The Design Centre in their
    honours year
  • Students must have achieved at least Credit
    average in their third year of studies and not
    done an Industry Placement.
  • Students are in the Design Centre a full working
    week.

International Opportunities
  • The Faculty of Design has over twenty exchange
    agreements with institutions in countries such
    asGermany, Sweden, Finland, Korea, Denmark,
    Malaysia, Mexico, UK and the USA.
  • These agreements allow exchange opportunities for
    all students to study for 1-2 semesters overseas.
  • Students progress through their course at the
    same rate and only pay for travel, accommodation
    and living expenses.

Study Tour (outgoing)
  • During November each year, a number of students
    take a six-week study tour to an international
    destination costing about AS6,000.
  • Students, guided by lecturers, have excursions to
    museums and design companies, and conduct
    collaborative work with local students.
  • Students on the Study Tour receive 25 credits
    towards the completion of their degree.

  • In November the Faculty of Design accepts
    students from all around the world to undertake
    design modules in Communication Design,
    Industrial Design, Interior Design and Multimedia
    Design.
  • Students are able to study one module (2 weeks),
    two modules (4 weeks) or three modules (6 weeks)
  • With prior agreement students may be able to
    transfer credits back to their home institution.

Study Abroad at Swinburne
  • International students are able to study at the
    Faculty of Design for 1-2 semesters as part of
    their own program.
  • In most cases the credits gained at Swinburne can
    be transferred as a component of the
    participants own degree program.
  • Students have the opportunity to choose range of
    subjects.
  • Students pay a semester fee of AS7,250 which
    includes a general service fee.
