Measuring for Coverage
  • Measure the outside of the building to get the
    area
  • Determine the pitch of the roof
  • Multiply the area by the Roof Pitch Factor (rise
and run multiplier) or the pitch of the roof
  • Determine area of gable by measuring the length x
    height and divide by 2.
  • Example Area of Building is 2,500 sq. ft. Roof
    Pitch is 512 two gables (20W x 8H 160 sq.
    ft.). Totals 2,500 x 1.08 2,700 sq. ft. 160
for gables 2,860 of radiant barrier will be
    needed

7
Installation on Roof Rafters
  • Three Methods
  • Side to Face
  • Face to Face
  • Inset Staple Only for Cavities sharing Mass
    Insulation
  • Staples
  • ¼ or larger staples
  • Galvanized or stainless steel staples

Question What kind of roof system is inset
stapling acceptable?
Answer Only sections where the radiant barrier
and the insulation share the same rafter (e.g.
2 x 10 vaulted roof).
8
Installation on Roof Rafters
  • Procedure
  • Determine the width of the rafters (16 or 24
    o.c.)
  • Is it a Gable or Hip Roof?
  • For the roof area, measure from the peak of the
    roof to the soffit
  • Cut the number of pieces of radiant barrier
  • Printed Side Faces Down - Metalized Side Faces Up
  • Staple one tab to a rafter
  • Pull the other tab to open the layers
  • Staple every 4 to 8
  • Fold over each end to encapsulate the layers

Question Why fold the ends?
Answer To enclose the ¾ reflective airspace to
attain the rated R-value.
9
Installation on Roof Rafters
Question Which way does printed side face?
Answer The printed side marked Silver Shield
faces down.
