Asians in America
  • In the 1830s Chinese began working as sugar
    masters in Hawaii as well as being peddlers and
    sailors in New York
  • In the late 1840s- 1850s, Asians used for
    workers in California Gold Rush
  • Chinese and Japanese are used for building the
    transcontinental railroad in the 1860s

  • The Burlingane Treaty was signed in 1868 to
    ensure friendship and welcome Asians into
    America. The population of Asian Americans
    increased 10 times over 30 years after the Treaty
  • Asian Immigrant receive many acts of
    discrimination such as not being allowed in
    public schools, not allowed to testify in court,
    and limited marriages up until 1900s

  • After 1900, Asians are targets of riots and hate
    crimes, as well as legislation passed against
    buying land known as alien land laws
  • In the early 1900s, Asians try to get equal
    rights by striking in various states and creating
    labor unions
  • After declaration of WWII, Japanse are put into
    Department of Justice camps
  • With the conclusion of WWII, all exclusionary
    laws against Asians were abolished

  • In 1989 President George Bush signs into law an
    entitlement program to pay each surviving
    Japanese American from WWII camps 20,000
  • Asians flourish now in America with the creation
    of Chinese and Japanese schools
  • Many Chinatowns and other Asian influenced
    neighborhoods have been created

  • Chinese created the oldest form of Martial Arts,
    Karate. It is dated back as early as 496 AD
  • Chinese history includes the earliest forms of
    Astrology
  • Fireworks, gunpowder, the compass, tea, and
    ceramics were all created by Chinese

    many video games and marketing personalities,
    such as Hello Kitty
