Facts About the Water Crisis
Did You Know???
  • The amount of Water that a single American uses
at one toilet flush is the same amount a family
uses in a developing country per day
  • 1 Billion people dont have access to safe
    drinking water
  • 2 million children a year die from lack of water
    and inadequate sanitation
  • Having safe water available reduces the risk of
    children mortality by 50
  • Water related Diseases are the leading cause of
    mortality

3
Statistics About Water
  • The average amount of water needed per day is
around 14 gallons for the basics of health
  • The average American uses 50-200 gallons of water
    per day
  • People in Africa on average use only 5-6 gallons
    per day
  • Every 15 seconds a child dies from a disease
    related from unsafe water

4
All the Water in the World.....
If all the worlds water were to fit into a 1
gallon jug, the amount humans have to work with
would fit about 1 tablespoon
5
Narrowing our Focus
6
Theres plenty of water in Kenya to supply to
everyone, but the problem is the unequal
distribution of the clean sources.
7
Imagine having to do this daily
8
Too much time is wasted hauling water back and
forth. These people are missing out on their
right to an education.
9
PlayPumps
The full cost of the PlayPump and its
installation is 14,000 dollars.
10
This pump allows for water to be localized and
for
11
Six dollars will give this child from Kenya clean
water for ten years through PlayPumps.

From Service to Advocacy

Problem 1Water Privatization
  • Companies have been consolidating power over
    water resources
  • IMF is subsidizing the private sector's expansion
    around the world
  • Consequence
  • Unequal water distribution and civil unrest

23
Taking Action
  • Our Congressmen are in charge of the US
Treasurys capacity to finance IMF decisions
  • We need to let our Congressmen know that America
will not support the devastation caused by water
    privatization

24
Problem 2MDGs Maybe 2020?
  • Access to water has a strong impact on all of
    these Goals
  • The US has been under funding their promised
    commitment of .7 GDP
  • Foreign Aid Spending by the rich countries has
    stalled
  • The World Bank has warned that developing
countries are unlikely to reach their targets for
    improving living conditions by 2015

25
Where is the Money?
  • The report points out that international
development assistance - estimated at 103.7bn in
2007 - actually fell compared to the previous
year, despite promises by the G8 countries at the
Gleneagles summit in 2005 to double aid by 2010.
  • Amazingly, rich countries gave twice as much of
their income to poor countries in 1963 than they
    did in 2007."

26
Taking More ActionHonoring our Promises
  • Our Congressmen are in charge of the UF funding
    of the Millennium Development Goals
  • We need to let Congress know that America will
honor our commitment that we made to developing
    nations

27
Carrying Out Our Strategy
28
Mission Statement
  • To assist in the development of a rural community
in Africa through the investment in
infrastructure that would provide safe drinking
water, a means to transport that water, and
technology to apply water in sustainable farming
  • Increasing awareness of the harms of under
funding the MDGs with regards to water as well
as the IMFs policy of encouraging water
    privatization

29
Our Objective
  • To make a replicable campaign model that can be
mimicked on multiple campuses across the country
  • Providing these different campuses with the
    resources and information to effectively
contribute to our collective fundraising and
    lobbying efforts

30
Fundraising Table
  • To advertise our table the week prior to its
appearance, little water droplet cut-outs with
quick surprising water facts will be placed
    around campus to raise awareness.
  • Later on, tables in popular areas like student
centers, dining halls, and quads will be set up
    for fundraising purposes.

31
On Our Campuses
  • The first way to reach out to our campuses would
be a personal experience of a water shortage.
This would really aid in letting people have a
better understanding of the problem at hand.
  • Events like a battle of the bands could be held
in support of our purpose as well to raise
    awareness and money.
  • Hosting a Water Week to educate students about
water scarcity in other part of the world
