The End of World War II
  • By the end of World War II, nearly all of Japans
cities and industries had lay in ruins.
  • Japan at this time needed all the help they could
get, in order for Japan to get back on its feet.
  • The U.S. saw this opportunity and than acted
    quickly.

A New Constitution
  • There was a new constitution that was calling for
a democratically elected legislature ( the Diet
    ).
  • The Diet is responsible for selecting the Prime
    Minister.
  • This constitution was put into effect in 1947.

Lets Call Peace
  • In 1951, both the Allies and Japan signed an
    official peace treaty.
  • This treaty took away all of Japans colonial
possessions and also allowed Japan to rearm for
defensive and internal (police) purposes only.
  • The Soviet Union had signed a separate agreement
with Japan 5 years later in 1956.

Industry Growth
  • Japans industry was growing rapidly after the
    1950s.
  • Thanks to the help of the U.S. Japans automobiles
    and electronics industries were becoming
    especially successful.
  • The Japanese became very resourceful at copying
existing plans and then manufacturing them with
new improvements to make the products better and
    cheaper.

Second Strongest and Largest
  • Japan at this time, was making a lot of money
from manufacturing and exporting goods all over
    the world.
  • They became the second and largest economy, right
    behind the U.S.
  • As the 20th century came along a lot of products
were made from Japan, this showed their
domination of products in Asia and around the
    world.

10
Times Have Changed
  • If you purchased a product in the 1950s with the
label Made in Japan people thought it was made
    cheap and poorly.
  • But as the 1990s came along if you purchased a
product without the label Made in Japan people
assumed that you were cheap and couldnt afford
    the better Japanese product.
