Introduction
  • Studying the Word of God
  • Purpose
  • to be like Him in our behavior towards Him,
    others and ourselves 1John 417 Matt 2237-39
  • To remind ourselves and others reason of our
    hope 1Pet315
  • Learn / study . to prepare ourselves to teach
    Heb512
  • . so that we may be thoroughly equipped for
    every good work 2Tim317

4
  • Fear of the Lord
  • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and
    discipline - Prov 17
  • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom
all who follow his precepts have good
understanding. To him belongs eternal praise - Ps
    11110

5
  • God and I
  • The Perfect Relationship
  • God saw all that he had made, and it was very
    good.. - Gen 131
  • The Warning
  • And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free
to eat from any tree in the garden 17 but you
must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil, for when you eat of it you will
    surely die. - Gen 216-17

6
  • God and I
  • Disobedience
  • When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was
good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also
desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and
ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who
was with her, and he ate it - Gen 36
  • Nature of God
  • God is light in him there is no darkness at all
    - I Jn 15
  • Light and Darkness
  • Imagine you are in a dark room which is pitch
    dark.
  • When you turn on the light, where is darkness ?
  • The existence of darkness is destroyed in the
    presence of light.
  • Darkness and light cannot mix. If God is to
appear right now, people who are still in
darkness will be destroyed. Many souls will be
    lost forever.

7
  • God and I
  • It is not Gods will for anyone to perish
  • The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as
some understand slowness. He is patient with you,
not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to
    come to repentance - 2 Pet 39
  • Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means
    salvation, ...... - 2 Pet 315

8
  • God and I
  • No matter how hard we try ..
  • All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags
we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind
our sins sweep us away - Isa 646
  • But God has a Plan
  • For God so loved the world that he gave his one
and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life - John 316
  • Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and
the life. No one comes to the Father except
    through me - John 146

9
  • God and I
  • Why didnt God prevent us from sinning ?
  • Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If
anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will
come in and eat with him, and he with me - Rev
    320
  • God is Love
  • For love to exist, there must be a choice. You
cannot force a person to love you. The negative
    choice leads to sin

10
  • God and I
  • Our God, our creator ..
  • wants to have a relationship with us. Any
loving parent wants to have a good relationship
    with their children.
  • Salvation is the result of a special relationship
    with God
  • A commitment to relationship and
  • Benefits arising from this relationship are
inter-linked. You cannot have the benefits of a
    relationship without commitment.

11
  • Sin
  • Sin in Greek is harmatia which means Missing
    the Mark
  • All have sinned .
  • for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
    of God - Rom 323
  • If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us - I Jn 18
  • Consequence of sin is death
  • For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord -
    Rom 623

12
  • Sin
  • Sinful Nature .
  • 21 So I find this law at work When I want to do
good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my
inner being I delight in God's law 23 but I see
another law at work in the members of my body,
waging war against the law of my mind and making
me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my
members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will
rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be
to God-- through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then,
I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but
in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin -
    Rom 721-25
  • Our passed sins were washed away when we obey the
Gospel, but that does not mean we do not sin
anymore. However hard we try not to sin, we will
still sin because we are in the flesh

13
  • Sin
  • We are Imperfect
  • As long as we are on earth, we do not have the
power to fly like birds Unless extra power is
provided like jet engine to overcome gravity
  • Christ our Savior
  • Jesus our savior, will lift us up. Through Him,
we have the power to overcome sin.
  • God forgives
  • If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from
    all unrighteousness - I Jn 19

14
  • Sin
  • Deliberate sins .
  • A person who deliberately sinned and is not
sorry for what he did is like a dog eating its
own vomit and like a pig dirtying itself in the
    mud 2Pet 222

15
  • Sin
  • Walking in the Light .
  • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and
the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all
    sin - I Jn 17
  • We know that we have come to know him if we obey
his commands. 4 The man who says, "I know him,"
but does not do what he commands is a liar, and
the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys
his word, God's love is truly made complete in
him. This is how we know we are in him 6 Whoever
claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did - I
    Jn 23-6

16
  • Sin
  • Christians will continue to face temptations .
  • Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the
devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking
for someone to devour - 1 Pet 58
  • For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and against
the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
    realms - Eph 612

17
  • Sin
  • Do you think God takes sin seriously ?
  • 2 But your iniquities have separated you from
your God your sins have hidden his face from
you, so that he will not hear. 3 For your hands
are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt.
Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue
    mutters wicked things
  • - Isa 592-3
  • All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags
we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind
our sins sweep us away. 7 No one calls on your
name or strives to lay hold of you for you have
hidden your face from us and made us waste away
because of our sins - Isa 646-7

18
  • Sin
  • Relationship .
  • A relationship is based on commitment and not
    taking advantage of one another.
  • Sin leads to a broken relationship.
  • Sin takes advantage of a relationship

19
  • Sin
  • How does the world define sin ?
  • If it does not hurt anyone, it is not a sin
  • Is this a good definition of sin ?
  • From whose point of view is this ?
  • See to it that no one takes you captive through
hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on
human tradition and the basic principles of this
world rather than on Christ - Col 28

20
  • Sin
  • Definition of sin from Gods view .
  • For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil
    thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,
adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness,
envy, slander, arrogance and folly. - Mark
    721-22
  • The acts of the sinful nature are obvious sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery 20 idolatry
and witchcraft hatred, discord, jealousy, fits
of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
21 and envy drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I
warn you, as I did before, that those who live
like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. -
    Gal 519-21

21
Definitions of sin
22
Definitions of sin
23
  • Sin
  • Word of God is like a double-edged Sword
  • Heb 412 For the word of God is living and
active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it
penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,
joints and marrow it judges the thoughts and
    attitudes of the heart.
  • - Mark 720-23

24
  • Sin
  • 4 types of Sin .
  • Sins of the heart
  • Sins of the flesh
  • Sins of Omission or negligence
  • Presumptious Sins

25
  • Sin
  • Sins of the heart .
  • He went on "What comes out of a man is what
makes him 'unclean.' 21 For from within, out of
men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual
immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed,
    malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander,
arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from
inside and make a man 'unclean. - Mark 720-23

26
  • Sin
  • Sins of the flesh .
  • The acts of the sinful nature are obvious sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery 20 idolatry
and witchcraft hatred, discord, jealousy, fits
of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
21 and envy drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I
warn you, as I did before, that those who live
like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. -
    Gal 519-21

27
  • Sin
  • Sins of omission or negligence .
  • Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do
and doesn't do it, sins - James 417

28
  • Sin
  • Wilful (or Presumptious) sins .
  • Keep your servant also from willful sins may
they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless,
innocent of great transgression - Ps 1913

29
  • Grace
  • Grace is defined as
  • the free and unearned favour of God (favour that
    is not earned)
  • unmerited divine assistance given humans for
    their regeneration or sanctification
  • the condition of being favored, loved, or saved
by God, esp. if this favor is unearned

30
  • Grace
  • Grace is a Gift from God
  • For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God 9 not by works, so that no one can
    boast. - Eph 28-9
  • Now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Judge
carefully, for with the LORD our God there is no
injustice or partiality or bribery. - 2 Chr 197

31
  • Grace
  • For the grace of God that brings salvation has
appeared to all men - Titus 211
  • Without grace, we are slave to sin and there
    will be no hope

32
  • Grace
  • Grace is through Jesus
  • For the law was given through Moses grace and
truth came through Jesus Christ. - John 117
  • Gods grace is sufficient
  • But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for
you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about
my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on
    me. - 2 Cor 129
  • Our God is not stingy with His grace
  • For the LORD God is a sun and shield the LORD
bestows favor and honor no good thing does he
withhold from those whose walk is blameless. - Ps
    8411

33
  • Grace
  • Grace is given to the Humble
  • God opposes the proud but gives grace to the
    humble. - James 46
  • Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will
lift you up - James 410
