Title: Geller 79 Behavior

1
Geller 7-9 Behavior
2
Review
  • Safety triad?
  • Behavior, environment, person
  • Person variables?
  • BASIC ID
  • Act people into changing their thinking?
  • Difference between proactive and reactive?
  • Moving from failure-oriented to
    achievement-oriented
  • Safety share at the start of meetings, report
something youve done for safety in the past week

3
Types of Learning
  • Classical conditioning
  • Respondent conditioning
  • After pairing a CS and UCS repeatedly, the CS
comes to elicit a CR that resembles the UCR.
  • Operant conditioning
  • Behaviors (operants) are a function of
    consequences
  • Vicarious learning behavior change through
seeing consequences applied for someone elses
    behavior
  • Most types of learning are operant, including
    vicarious learning

4
DO IT
  • D define critical target behaviors
  • O observe the target behavior during baseline
  • I intervene develop a behavior change
    strategy
  • T test the impact of the behavior change
    strategy

5
Observing
  • S specific, concise behavioral definition
  • O observable, overt behaviors, countable and
    recordable
  • O objective, no interpretations
  • N naturalistic, normal interaction, real-world
    activity

6
Checklist Options
  • Comprehensive list vs small list of behaviors
  • Shorter CBC may involve little or no verbal
feedback (most published studies of BBS)
  • SBOs?
  • Safe behavior opportunity a chance to observe
the target behaviors. Dont observe people,
    observe behavior.

7
Behavioral Safety Analysis
  • Discrepancy, not deficiency
  • GAP analysis analyze and reduce the gap between
    ideal and current behavior (Gilbert)
  • Causes of discrepancy
  • State the discrepancy
  • Is change necessary?
  • Can the task be simplified?
  • Are expectations clear?
  • Is behavior-based feedback available?
  • What are the natural consequences?
  • Is there a skill discrepancy? (Unconsciously
    incomp.)
  • Is the person right for the job?
  • What kind of training is needed?
  • Maintenance vs acquisition
  • Which solutions yield the most for the least
    effort?

8
BBS Safety Training
  • Education versus training?
  • Types of behavior
  • Other-directed
  • Automatic (habits)
  • Self-directed
  • Intervention types
  • Instructional intervention - acquisition
  • Supportive intervention - practice
  • Motivational intervention

9
The 4 Competency States
  • Unconscious incompetence
  • Automatic behavior at-risk habits
  • Dont know how to do it
  • Conscious incompetence
  • Self- and other-directed behavior irresponsible
  • Know how to do it, but dont
  • Conscious competence
  • Do it b/c other-directed accountable
  • Do it b/c self-directed responsible
  • Unconscious competence
  • Do it b/c automatic behavior safe habit
