Work Place Safety
  • Be vigilant when YOU are going about your work!
  • Phone numbers are on the handsets of each phone
    at service desks.

The Rules
  • Each Response depends upon situation, we
    certainly can not cover every event you might see
    in this Library but we can at least give you an
    overview.
  • 1. DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER!
  • 2. Protect patrons to the best of your ability.
    Normally protecting the patrons involves getting
    assistance to deal with the situation.
  • 3. Call Police if threat is of concern then try
    to call Supervisor. 8000
  • 4. What if you are uncomfortable with what is
    going on, threat not imminent but a concern,
    and/or you can not seem to get any building help
    Call Police at extension 2150
  • 5. Call or page Supervisor if threat low.
  • 6. If we have an Ambulance Responding send
    someone to the front doors to show them to the
    injured parties location.

Security
1. Improper open doorways. Offices, Store Rooms,
classrooms. 2. Potential security issues (i.e.
Person under the influence, fight in the
building, hazing incident drug sales, banned
Individual), etc. 3. Suspected theft of
material, alarm goes off but patron does not
stop. 4. Patrons acting inappropriately.

Fire
  • IF YOU SEE THE FIRE FIRST PULL A FIRE STATION
    OR
  • CALL 8000 or 9911
  • 1. When there is a fire alarm, evacuate the
    building immediately.
  • 2. On your way out, encourage people to leave,
    but DO NOT PUT YOURSELF AT RISK do not argue
    with patrons who will not leave the building,
    just tell the Building Supervisor or the Firemen
    when you see them where the individual/s is
    located.
  • 3. What if the person is mobility challenged?
    The stair wells (Other than the Grand Staircase)
    are two hour rated locations, try and help the
    person relocate to that area, while summoning for
    assistance from the Evening Supervisor or the
    Fire Dept.
  • 4. IF YOU have been trained to use a fire
    extinguisher, AFTER YOU HAVE SOUNDED THE ALARM -
    you can try to put out a small trash fire BUT,
  • DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER!

Fire Extinguisher Training
  • How many have been trained on Fire Extinguisher
    Use?
  • How Many would Like To ATTEND A ONE HOUR, HANDS
    ON CLASS, to Learn how to use an ABC fire
    extinguisher.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
  • 1. Blood borne pathogens, body fluids, vomit,
    spit, or other sources.
  • 2. Fecal Material
  • 3. Unknown chemicals or powders.
  • 4. Strange baggies with crystalline products.
  • Typically you will notify your evening Supervisor
    or Call the Police at 2150, to alert
    Housekeeping. Note, Housekeeping is normally on
    site until midnight.

BUILDING ISSUES
  • 1. LEAKING Ceiling
  • 2. LEAKING Window
  • 3. BROKEN BUILDING ITEMS THAT NEED REPAIR
  • 4. POWER OUTAGE Building on Emergency Generator
  • Let Evening Supervisor know of problem, unless it
    is a large leak, then notify Police at 8000.
  • Learn where your floors Emergency Preparedness
    Kit is located and what is in it.

FIRST AID KIT
  • 1. Learn where it is located at your particular
    Service Location.
  • 2. The most we are allowed to dispense is a
    Band-Aid.
  • 3. Find out if the cut/accident occurred in the
    Library and if Housekeeping needs to be
    notified.
  • 4. Fill out the appropriate paperwork.

to Regular Duty Notify Supervisor weekly of
Changes or Concerns

SUPERVISORS CHECKLIST
Send Employee to Approved Medical Provider
(Unless Emergency) EMERGENCY ONLY Immediately
notify WCA of catastrophic injury If After Hours,
Contact University Police (828-262-8000) Complete
appropriate Forms within 24 hours Obtain All
Signatures And send to WCA Identify Modified
Duty and Notify WCA Maintain Weekly Contact with
Employee Immediately notify WCA of employee
notification of medical status change or absences
due to the injury.

SUPERVISORS CHECKLIST (cont.)
  • Employees must follow existing ASU Workers'
    Compensation Reporting and Filing Procedures in
    order to be compensated by Key Risk Management
    Services, Inc.

MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
The University Police Department will provide
on-campus transportation to injured or sick
students/employees to the Health Services
Infirmary (Miles Annas Bldg) for
non-emergencies If the Infirmary is closed,
University Police will transport to the Watauga
County Medical Center Emergency Room and back to
campus.  If students or employees require
transportation for an emergency injury or
illness, they should call 9-911, and the Watauga
County Medics and/or ambulance service will
handle the transport to the Watauga County
Medical Center Emergency Room.For on-campus
non-emergencies call 262-2150For on-campus
medical emergencies call 9-911

MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
Transported employee(s) must meet the following
conditions ? Injured, ill employee(s) must
get to the transport vehicle with minimal
assistance.  ? Injured, ill employee(s)
must be able to ride in an upright position.
 ? If employee(s) is/are bleeding, bleeding must
be contained (stopped).  
NOTE If these conditions cannot be met, Watauga
Ambulance Service will be dispatched to provide
transportation for injured, ill employee(s).
  NOTE It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that
employees or supervisors DO NOT transport injured
or ill employees to medical treatment sites!!
