3 Types of Assessment
  • Formative
  • Ongoing assessments in the classroom to inform
    instruction and learning
  • Interim
  • Planned assessments at intervals to make local
decisions at district and school levels
  • Summative
  • Year end large-scale assessments for all decision
    making and future reference

4
5
Formative Assessment
  • formative assessment n. A process used by
teachers and students during instruction that
provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and
learning for the purpose of improving students
    achievement of intended instructional outcomes.
  • EAGLE supports Formative Assessment
  • Teachers use assessment to inform their
instruction. They change and adjust their
instruction based on the needs for each student.
  • Students use assessment to inform their
learning. They must make adjustments to what they
are learning and they must develop strategies for
    learning.

Grade-Level Expectations and New StandardsWhat
are Content Standards?
  • Content Standards are statements that define what
a student should know and be able to do
  • at the end of specific time period or grade level
  • in a specific subject area
  • Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)
  • Term used in Louisiana for content standards for
    a specific grade
  • Synonymous to Standards in Common Core State
    Standards
  • CCS ELA vs. GLEs ELA
  • GLEsELA taught in isolation Literature and
literary skills (identifying terms and devices
    like theme)
  • CCSELA taught in collaboration Informational
texts for College Career and Readiness
    (Cross-content literacy integration)
  • CCS Math Balanced combination of procedural
skill and understanding Requires students to
explain and justify rather than define and
    identify

Implementation of New Standards

Science and Social Studies Standards
  • Science Content Standards
  • Next Generation Science Standards currently under
    development by national groups
  • Expected release in Spring 2012
  • Will be reviewed for appropriateness to replace
    current Louisiana science standards if
acceptable, will be adopted in Summer or Fall
2012 to be implemented in 2014-15
  • Social Studies Content Standards
  • Revised by committees of state educators in
    2010-11
  • To be considered by BESE for approval in June
    2011
  • To be implemented in 2014-15

Formative Assessment Strategiesthat help
Students Learn
  • Learning Targetsbreaking down GLEs into simple
    language for students
  • Examples of strong and weak work.
  • Progress Monitoringfrequent feedback about how
the student is doing on GLEs
  • Self-assessmentteaching the student to monitor
their own learning of the GLEs
  • Focused Learningcustomizing instruction to allow
students to focus on difficult GLEs
  • SELF-REFLECTIONhaving students write about their
    learning of the GLEs
  • Instructional PLANbased on available datahave a
plan for each class that covers each and every
    student

An EAGLE Grade 3 Math Class Created as a
database in The LEAPdata Query System
  • Print your EAGLE Class showing students
  • Sign in to the LEAPdata Query System
  • Click on Create a Database
  • Select the students shown for the grade
  • Give the database a name and Save
  • View or Modify to add students that were not
shown (need state id) and Save
  • Generate Reports for analysis (Performance and
    Individual Student Reports)
  • Come up with Instructional Strategies
  • Use EAGLE to Monitor Progress

Key Features of EAGLE
  • Student-friendly GLEshelp students learn what
they are expected to know at their grade level
and help teachers communicate those expectations
    to students.
  • Reports for Studentsfoster student
self-assessment and show students how well they
are progressing on each GLE theyve been tested
Encourages students to focus their learning on
    particular GLEs.
  • Reports for Teachersinform teachers how the
class as a whole is progressing AND how
individual students are performing on each GLE.
  • Customized Test Constructionallows teachers to
build tests based on targeted instruction
customized tests can be assigned to an individual
student or a group of students

14
15
How to create a Student-friendly LEARNING TARGET
Example Grade 5 Math GLE 27
  • GLE 27Identify and plot points on a coordinate
    grid in the first quadrant.
  • GLE Student-friendly version Plot and name
points on a coordinate grid. (Student friendly
    GLEs are available in EAGLE.)
  • Word(s) to be defined coordinate grid
  • Definition(s) of word(s) the student may not
    understand
  • A coordinate grid has two perpendicular lines,
or axes, labeled like number lines. The
horizontal line is called the x-axis. The
vertical line is called the y-axis. The point
where the lines cross is called the origin. (Show
the students a picture with the x- and y-axes and
    origin labeled.)
  • Student-friendly learning target Have students
use I am learning to statements I am
learning to plot and name points on an x, y grid.

Naming a Test
  • The test name is used to view/edit schedules and
    see reports.
  • Consider adding a date/time/unit
  • Clone a test
  • Can be saved as a new test with a new name and
    then modified and scheduled.
