Operating Systems Coursework 2 Essay

• Write an essay of 2000-3000 words on the topic of
  Operating Systems for mobile handheld devices
  such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants),
  Organisers and Pocket PCs. Such gadgets offer
  functions such as calendar/diary organising,
  telephone/fax and networking features, games etc.
  amongst many other things. They have a small LCD
  display, sometimes colour, and often use a stylus
  for touch-screen interaction rather than a
  keyboard. Behind the user-level applications is
  an operating system. Your essay should be
  concerned with technical details of these
  operating systems, their organisation and the
  facilities they provide for application-level
  software. We are not concerned with the
  applications themselves in any detail.
• A number of manufacturers make these devices
  including Palm with their Palm III, V and VII
  series, HP with its Jornada series, Psion,
  Casios Cassiopeia, Handsprings Visor etc. Some
  use their own proprietary operating systems and
  some use more widely available ones. For
  instance, Palm and a number of other
  manufacturers use PalmOS, Psion use their own
  EPOC system and the rest tend to use Microsofts
  Windows CE.
• Write an overview of each of these three
  operating systems (and any others you may come
  across) together with a comparison of their
  approaches. This should be followed by a
  description of one of then in more technical
  detail.
• Your main source of information will be the Web.
  There are also one or two books (on Windows CE,
  in particular). Include a list of references to
  the sources of information you have used,
  including URLs where appropriate. Your main
  difficulty is likely to be separating technical
  information from sales and marketing dross.
• Your essay should be word-processed, not
  hand-written, and a hard-copy version handed in
  to the Informatics Teaching Office on or before
  the deadline.
