Title: Recruits Warpath
1Recruits Warpath
2Plan
- Mission To prove that we, as recruits, are
worthy enough to be invited back to the Academy
(GIS Club). - Plan To organize a march in six months,
starting in November. - Deadline April 30
3"Walking Trail"
- Phase I
- Learn ArcView 3.3
- Create Shape Files
- Plot Waypoints
- Site Visit to Test Trails
- Corrections
4Learning ArcView
- ArcView is a sophisticated system of surveillance
cameras and as the recruits of Overlord Academy,
it is our first job to work the night shift of
ArcView. ArcView GIS is a mapping software using
themes and views to layer different maps and
types of information.
5Shape Files
- Shape files are a fairly big part of our
training. Shape files help tell us where certain
objects are (or supposed to be, in the case of
the river). Sometimes shape files can be complex
polygons, or sometimes they can be as simple as a
single point. The first shape file we as
recruits learn to do is a gigantic man-made lake.
It is always helpful when deploying troops to
know if you are trying to march through a 50 foot
deep lake.

7Contour Lines
- Contour lines are another extremely good point to
make to younger troops, and our instructors have
pounded the importance of contour lines into us.
Why, you ask? Well think about how an infantry
unit feels about having to carry 15 pound
backpacks across a 5 foot distance with an
incline of 15 feet!!! That is very steep, come
to think of it, that is steep enough to go
cardboard sliding . . . . . .

9Learning How to Fire a GPS
- (or how to enter a waypoint)
One of the first things that we, at the Overlord
Academy (GIS Club), learn to do is to fire a GPS
(enter a way point). First, we thumb off the
safety (turn on the GPS receiver). Next we
scroll through the various safe points to start
our path of destruction (trial trail). If there
is no safe points already entered, we enter a new
point by pressing the button on the front upper
left side. It will then plot the point. As part
of our rigorous training (and because the senior
members dont want to), we as recruits must march
to the next point of entry. Absolutely BRUTAL!!!

11First March of the New Year
- Our first march (first site visit) was a very big
deal to us new recruits, because it separated the
quitters and the winners okay so maybe that is a
little harsh. Anyway our first site visit was
extremely exciting for all our recruits. It
showed us what we were really working with. Of
course we had to move almost all of our way
points. They were in the river and on manholes.
Needless to say, we had a lot more work ahead of
us!!!
