Title: No human is illegal
1No human is illegal
- By Andrew, Conor, Priscilla, Sara
2Ethical Questions
- How do we decide who gets to enter the United
States and experience the opportunities for a
better life? - How do we create a system in which immigrants and
migrant laborers human rights are protected
while maintaining the rights of American
citizens? - How do we establish structures that balance the
need for United States national security with
the need and right of people to immigrate?
3Goals for our presentation
- To gain a better understanding of the
immigration/ migrant worker situation - To see how the Cycles of Poverty, Despair, and
Violence and immigration are all connected - To appreciate the rights we have as US citizens
- To work for the equal treatment of immigrants and
migrant farm workers
4Past U.S. Immigration laws
- Chinese Exclusion Act (1882)
- Alien Land Laws (1913, 1920, 1923)
- Immigration Act (1924)
- Tydings McDuffie Act (1934)
- Amendments to Immigration and Nationality Act
(1965) - Immigration Reform and Control Act (1986)
5Current Immigration Laws
- Immigration Act (1996)- Strengthened border
patrols, set greater penalties for the smuggling
of immigrants - In 1997, resident "aliens" with felony
convictions may be deported.
6The Current Debate In the Senate about
Immigration
7Immigration Facts
- Nearly 900,000 persons are being legally admitted
into the US annually - Another 300,000 undocumented migrants come into
the US annually - 43 of undocumented migrants reside in California
- Undocumented persons in the US add at least 22
billion - The US is debating building a 700 mile wall at
the Mexican border to stop migration
8Guest Worker Program
- Proposed by President Bush a temporary worker
program to match willing foreign workers with
U.S. employers when no Americans can be found to
fill the jobs - Open to foreigner workers and undocumented
workers already in US - Workers need to pay a one-time fee to register in
the program
9Minutemen
- Volunteers who patrol the border
- Believe that the federal government has neglected
its enforcement of immigration policies
10Opposing Viewpoints
- Pro- Immigration
- Provides for a gain in economic welfare
- Increases diversity
- Improves living standards for immigrants
- Gives foreigners a chance to attain the American
Dream
- Anti- Immigration
- Takes away jobs from American citizens
11Catholic Social Teaching
Participation Every human has the right and duty
to participate in society. This principle teaches
us that the basic rights of workers must be
respected and protected. All workers have the
right to decent and fair wages and to organize
into unions.
- Human EqualityAll humans documented or
undocumented should be treated fairly. The
equality of all people comes from their inherent
dignity. All humans have dignity and in reality
the undocumented immigrants are really no
different from our parents and grandparents that
came here to make a better life for us.
Option for the Poor This principle teaches us to
put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
It is the duty of the more fortunate to help the
poor.
12Immigration and Cycles of Poverty, Despair, and
Violence
- Cycle of Poverty the undocumented immigrants
want to come to the U.S. because they are poor in
their native countries - Cycle of Despair the undocumented immigrants
feel despair and lose hope to make money in their
native land, so they risk everything they have to
cross the border with coyotes - Cycle of Violence when in America, undocumented
immigrants face violence from fellow laborers and
bosses
Poverty
Violence
Despair
13What justice need does immigration fulfill in
society?
- Everyone, no matter where he/she is from should
have the opportunity to achieve the life they
want - Everyone should have the opportunity to achieve
the American Dream
14Call to Action
- The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the
Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006
(CIRA) on Monday, March 27 to reform our broken
immigration system. - Many senators are deciding how to vote on this
issue - Senators are looking for your opinion this is a
