  • The county was named after the governor of the
    Province of New Jersey, Colonel Lewis Morris.
  • Morris County was inhabited by the Lenape before
    the Europeans came.
  • Morris County was known as the The Military
    Capital of the Revolutionary War, because its
    location, which made General George Washington
    and his Continental Army make their winter camps
    for two different winters.
  • George Washington and his army camped here. A
    Morristown resident, George Mc Culloch, built the
    Morris canoe in 1831.

    2000 census.
  • In 1950 to 1960 there was a significant
    population increase of 69,000 people, at that
    time, the population was 337,093 wich grew to
    406,618 in those ten years. But during the next
    45 years there has been a slow but steady
    population increase of 406,618 to 499,060. A
    total increase of 93,000 people.

  • Sussex County was named by Jonathan Belcher for
    Sussex in England.
  • The Lenni-Lenape tribe,part of the Algonquin
    nation were the original inhabitants of Sussex
    County.They were very peaceful.
  • Dr. Joseph Warren,a native of Sussex
    County,helped recruit and organize soldiers
    during the Siege of Boston.He led Revolutionary
    forces at Bunker Hill.
