Wireless Trace Analysis
Fall 2007
  • Suyong Lee and Renata Aryanti
  • Advisor Prof. Suman Banerjee
  • With assistance of Vladimir Brik and Michael
    Blodget

2
What we are doing
  • Analyzing the wireless traffic traces in Helen C.
White College Library building, located in 600 N.
    Park St, Madison, WI.
  • 1. Contention
  • 2. Mobility Pattern
  • 3. Users Connection Pattern
  • 4. Data Rate Distribution
  • 5. Download VS Upload Stream
  • 6. Traffic Distribution Among APs

3
Network Usage
  • Of all the wireless traces collected in HCW
College Library, this is the data
  • Xx is using UW-Net-Helen C White network
  • Xx is using other UW network, such as
Memorial Union, ScienceHall, or Water Science
    network.
  • Xx are using foreign network.

4
Network Usage(Continue)?
5
Contention
  • The number of nodes connected on each AP over
time. Each color on the diagram represent
different APs. The data is from the AP logs.
  • The data is taken from the logs on May 15th
    17th, 2007

Association, Disassociation, MaxRetries, and
Roaming
  • May 17th, 2007

13
Mobility
  • Analyze the prevalence of each user.
  • Prevalence the fraction of length each user
connected on each AP compared to the whole
connection time to the whole network.

14
Prevalence
  • May 15th, 2007

15
Prevalence
  • May 16th, 2007

16
Prevalence
  • May 17th, 2007

17
Users Connection Pattern
  • How long each user connected to the network every
    day.
  • How many APs the users usually connected to in a
    day.

18
Length of Connected for users
  • May 15th May 17th

19
Number of APs users get connected in a day
  • May 15th May 17th

20
Download VS Upload Stream
  • Analyze the download VS upload stream for each AP.

21
Traffic Distribution between APs
  • The traffic go pass each APs
