What was the Korean War?

• The Korean War, also known as the forgotten war,
  was a by-product of the Cold War.
• In fact the Korean War was the only actual
  conflict during the Cold War.
• The war lasted from 1950 to 1953 (a cease fire
  was called in 1953 and has lasted till this day
  the war has not yet ended officially.)

Why are North Korea and South Korea Separated?

• At the end of World War 2, the then 2 great
  super-powers of the world USA and the USSR still
  occupied Korea.
• In 1950 they agreed to split the country in half.
  The USA was in charge of South Korea and the USSR
  was in charge of North Korea.
• They split the country along the 38th parallel.
  The 38th parallel is a line that you would see on
  a map of the world, or a globe. The 38th parallel
  is a line that splits Korea right down the
  centre.
• The Republic of Korea was called in South Korea,
  and in the North the Peoples Democratic Republic
  of Korea in the North.

Who Started the war?

• Relations between the two countries became
  increasingly strained, and on June 25, 1950,
  North Korean forces invaded South Korea.
• The United Nations quickly condemned the invasion
  as an act of aggression, demanded the withdrawal
  of North Korean troops from the South, and called
  upon its members to aid South Korea.

Who else fought in the Korean War?

• The United Nations decided to send a force of
  nations over to defend South Korea, when North
  Korea didnt comply.
• Composed of contingents from 15 nations including
  Australia, Britain, United States, Canada,
  Turkey, Greece, Colombia, New Zealand, The
  Philippines, France, The Netherlands, South
  Africa and Luxembourg.
• They also sent in medical units from Denmark,
  India, Italy, Norway and Sweden

Conflict

• In the first weeks of the conflict the North
  Korean forces met little resistance and advanced
  rapidly.
• By the 10th of September, 1950, they had driven
  the South Korean army and a small American force
  to the southeast tip of Korea, and had captured
  almost all of South Korea including Seoul South
  Koreas capital city.
• North Korea now occupied almost all of Korea and
  to many it looked like they had won the war.

Fighting Back

• A counterattack began on the 15th of September,
  when UN forces made a courageous landing on the
  west coast of Korea, and gave the American and
  South Korean forces some much needed
  re-enforcements.
• Thanks to these re-enforcements, North Korean
  forces suffered heavy losses and had to retreat
  back into their own country, as their forces were
  stretched and could not hold back the combined
  forces of the UN, USA and South Korea.

Conclusion

• After months of heavy fighting, and of great
  losses to both sides, the center of the conflict
  was returned to the 38th parallel, where it
  remained for the rest of the war.
• However tensions between the 2 nations remain
  tense. Even today the whole of the world is wary
  of North Korea as they have kept their country
  almost closed off, and almost no-one knows what
  they are doing.
