1Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
Dynamic Passenger Information Project (DPI
Project)
March 27, 2008
2Presentation Overview
- 1. Project Background
- 2. Project Goals
- 3. Concept of Operations
- 4. Key Challenges
- 5. Tentative Schedule
3Background
- DPI Project - customer desired transit
improvement feature identified from Comprehensive
Operations Analysis (COA) study and previous
on-board surveys - DPI Project Goal - to develop a real-time
transit information system that provides
predictive arrival/departure times for VTAs bus
and light rail vehicles via phone, internet, and
electronic signs - Funding Sources - 5.6 million project funded by
Federal, regional, and local funding sources
4Project Goals
- Provide real-time transit information to
customers - Provide predictive arrival/departure times of
transit vehicles for selected routes and stops - Provide accessible real-time transit information
- Telephone/Cell Phone
- Internet (wireless devices)
- Electronic Variable Message Boards/Signs
- Integrate and coordinate with Bay Areas 511
system - Increase transit ridership
5Concept of Operations Key Functions
- Gather bus and light rail vehicle location
information - Provide predictive vehicle arrival/departure
times - Push transit vehicle identification data to
customer interface points (telephone, internet,
electronic signs) - Share data directly with other transit agencies
and through out the Bay Area 511 System
6Key Challenges
- Procuring a predictive vehicle arrival system
with open coding and architecture, while building
upon legacy systems - Coordinating with MTC on the development of a
telephone-based customer interface that can
provide transit information for all transit
routes and transit stops - Integrating data from existing and new systems to
develop transit information that can be accessed
by telephone phone, internet, and displayed on
electronic signs - Addressing impacts to existing VTA operational
processes new tasks for VTA staff as a result of
this implementation
7Tentative Project Schedule
- Spring 2008 Finalize Technical Specifications
- Fall 2008 Develop DPI core system
-
- Winter 2008 Begin deployment of DPI System with
focus on VTA Rapid 522 line and integration with
light rail system
