HL7 Health Level 7

• Founded in 1987 to develop standards for the
  electronic interchange of clinical, financial and
  administrative information
• HL7 2.x and later are ANSI standards
• Latest production version is 2.3.1
• CDC recommends HL7, LOINC and SNOMED for ELR

LOINC Laboratory Observation Identifiers Names
and Codes

• Code system for reporting test results
• First released in April 1996
• Has been quickly accepted by a broad spectrum of
  organizations

SNOMED Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine

• An enabling technology used in over 40 countries
  and in existence over 35 years
• SNOMED allows for consistent gathering of
  detailed clinical information
• Columbia-Harvard-Stanford and Mayo-Kaiser are
  working on general medical codes/vocabularies
• LOINC and SNOMED are considered complimentary
