DC, 2-4 June 2008
2MyOcean
- A project
- A service
- A team
3MyOcean, a projectfor ocean monitoring and
forecasting in Europe
4MyOcean, a European Commission GMES project

5The challenge
- Set up and demonstrate operationality of a
European Marine Core Service - MERSEA Strand 1 (2003-2004) has shown the value
of the European monitoring and forecasting
systems - MERSEA (2004-2008) has worked on the design and
development of a European integrated system - MyOcean (2008-2011) has to deliver a fully
qualified service
Ocean monitoring and forecasting
6The project
- A project initiated and co-funded by the European
Commission (EC research program) - Involving 60 partners from 28 different countries
-
- A 3-year project
- Should start before end of 2008, to end in 2011
- 60 M for 3 years, with 33 M funded by EC
- Currently ending the negotiation with EC
- First call Dec 2006 First proposal June 2007
7MyOcean, a servicefor ocean monitoring and
forecasting in Europe
8The core service
- MyOcean will provide the common denominator data
for all users in the marine sector, in other
words the information for existing new
downstream services.
- Climate
- Marine Environment
- Seasonal and weather forecasting
- Offshore
- Maritime transport and safety
- Fisheries
- Research
- General Public
9MyOcean Market Segmentation
- The users, their requirements, their assessment
Area 1 Â MARINE SAFETYÂ (marine operations, oil
spill combat, ship routing, defense, search
rescue, )
Area 3 Â MARINE AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENTÂ (water
quality, pollution, coastal activities, )
Area 4 Â CLIMATE SEASONAL FORECASTINGÂ (climate
monitoring, ice, seasonal forecasting, ..)
Area 2 Â MARINE RESSOURCESÂ (fish stock
management, ICES, FAO, )
10The MyOcean offer
- MyOcean will deliver regular and systematic
reference information on the state of the oceans
- Physical state of the ocean, and primary
ecosystem - Global ocean, and main European basins and seas
- Large and basin scale mesoscale physics
- Hindcast, Nowcast, Forecast
- Data, Assimilation and Models

133 years to
- Implement and run the MyOcean system to deliver
the core service - Qualify it to get the  operational stamp
- Interact with users to get requirements and
feedbacks - Bring in continuous innovation through RD
- Prepare the organization for the longer term
14MyOcean, a teamfor ocean monitoring and
forecasting in Europe
15The MyOcean team
- Lead by Mercator Ocean
- 60 partners, 28 countries
- All European maritime countries
- A core group of 15 partners the European GODAE
partners
A MyOcean network involving all European maritime
countries Partners networking 28 countries for
users requirements
- In the consortium,
- 1/3 of  operators ,
- 1/3 of  expertise (research industry),
- 1/3 to market  users need
16Responsibilities

17Conclusion
18MyOcean GODAE
- MyOcean, a European project opened to the GODAE
world and partners - Links to be reinforced as soon as the
European-centric nego phase is over - MyOcean, the European focal point for
GODAE-follow-on activities - MyOcean to continue and foster GODAE good
practices - Metrics and validation practices
- Data exchanges and interoperability issues
