Title: PDA Baseball Scoring

1
PDA Baseball Scoring
  • Easy Baseball Scoring
  • for the
  • 3Com PalmPilot

2
The Traditional Approach
3
Why use a PDA?
  • Traditional scoring requires memorizing codes
  • Scorecards are small and too difficult to write
    in
  • A PDA can automatically tabulate statistics

4
The Interface
  • Allows users with little knowledge of baseball to
    score a game
  • Always has a message bar to guide the user
  • The scorekeeper will allow undo up to the play of
    the previous batter.

5
The Old Interface
6
The New Interface
7
Proposed Tasks for test
  • Easy task
  • A play by play recording of a simple at bat.

8
Proposed Tasks for Test
  • Medium task
  • Scoring the triple.
  • The extra information of the batter making a hit
(and running to the third base) makes this task
    more difficult.

9
Proposed Tasks for Test
  • Hard task
  • Pick-off a runner.
  • A runner tries to steal second base, but is
tagged out by the second baseman who gets the
baseball from the pitcher through the first
    baseman.

10
Major Amendments
  • Changing the background color.
  • The current inning is displayed.
  • The number of pitches has been added to fix the
    feedback on foul balls.
  • Players number is added to the batter and the
    runner.
  • Status bar now displays the name of the batter.

11
Major Amendments
  • The bases have now been grayed out to prevent
    confusion.
  • All dragging has been replaced with clicking.
  • Automatically ending a play when there are no
    runners left on the field.

12
Pilot Testing Procedure
  • Introduction to Baseball scoring
  • Instructions on using our UI
  • Free play time with UI
  • Forced the subject to score an actual Baseball
    game caught on tape
  • Feedback and comments

13
Results
  • Some action functions unclear (Hit, Throw)
  • Trouble with free-form ordering of ball and
    runner movement
  • VB annoyances (Buttons, No Feedback)
  • Missing functionality(Line-out, Balk)

14
Conclusion
  • Have fixed most of the problems.
  • Our prototype is still a VB application.
  • Different from Palm OS based implementation.
  • Replicate the Palm Pilot environment by
  • Limiting screen capabilities.
  • Simulating physical features of the Pilot.
