1HERE IN GREECE WE CELEBRATE EASTER (WE CALLED IT
PASHA) IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY. THE HOLLY WEEK
(THE WEEK BEFORE SUNDAY OF EASTER) WE GO TO
CHURCH EVERY DAY AND ALSO WE DO FASTING.
PASHA
PASHA IS THE GREEK WORD FOR EASTER
2EASTER IS A MOVEABLE HOLIDAY. IT IS THE FIRST
SUNDAY AFTER THE FOOL MOON THAT FOLLOWS THE 21ST
MARCH (THE DAY THAT THE NIGHT IS EQUAL TIME TO
DAY). THIS YEAR EASTER IS AT 27TH MARCH. BUT THE
CELEBRATIONS STARTS FROM 19 MARCH AND ENDS AT 28
MARCH. WE STOPPED SCHOOL AT 18 MARCH.
3ONE WEEK BEFORE HOLLY SATURDAY IS THE SATURDAY OF
LAZARUS (19 MARCH). THIS DAY YOUNG GIRLS SING
SPECIAL CAROLS. IN THIS SONG THE CHILDREN SING
ABOUT THE MIRACLE OF JESUS, THAT CONCERN THE
RISING OF LAZARUS FROM THE DEADS.
The Lazarines (the girls that sing the carols
for Lazarus).
420 MARCH IS THE PALM SUNDAY THAT REFERS TO THE
TRIUMPHAL ENTRY OF JESUS INTO JERUSALEM IN THE
DAYS BEFORE HIS PASSION. IN THIS DAY WE GO TO
CHURCH AND BRING PALM BRANCES TO OUR HOMES.
5ON HOLLY THURSDAY (24 MARCH) WE PAINT THE EGGS
RED THAT SYMBOLIZES THE BLOOD FROM JESUS. BUT WE
DO NOT EAT THEM UNTIL EASTER. THIS DAY IS ALSO
CALLED RED THURSDAY AND WOMEN USUALLY HANG A RED
CLOTH OUTSIDE THE HOUSE.
6HOLLY FRIDAY IS THE MOST SACRED DAY OF EASTER. ON
HOLLY FRIDAY WE GO AROUND OUR VILLAGE WITH
CANDLES AND THE EPITAPH (A SACRED TABLE WHICH
STANDS FOR THE GRAVE OF JESUS). IN THE ISLANDS
THEY PUT THE EPITAPF IN THE SEA SO FOR THE WATER
TO BE BLESSED.
7AT HOLLY SATURDAY MIDNIGHT (2400) WE CELEBRATE
THE RISING OF JESUS. WE ALL GO TO CHURCH WITH OUR
CANDLES. THEN WE GO BACK HOME AND BRING THE LIGHT
WITH US. WE USUALLY DO A MARK OF A CROSS AT THE
DOOR OF OUR HOUSE SO AS TO BE BLESSED ALL YEAR.
AFTER THIS WE EAT EGGS AND SOUP.
8THE SUNDAY OF EASTER IS THE BEST DAY. THIS DAY WE
ROAST A LAMB AND CELEBRATE WITH OUR FAMILIES AND
RELATIVES.
9IN THE EASTER WE ARE VERY HAPPY BECAUSE WE DONT
GO TO SCHOOL!
