Fighting Malaria Through Effective
Partnerships
2What is Malaria RD
- Create new and improved tools such as
easier-to-use diagnostics, longer-lasting ITNs,
more effective insecticides, new and better
antimalarial drugs, vaccines and new vector
control methods - Maximize the effectiveness of existing malaria
control tools, i.e., implementation research to
improve ITN and insecticide use, diagnosis, and
treatment - Build capacity in endemic countries to design,
conduct, and exploit the research necessary to
solve the malaria problem
3The Innovation Gap
- Factors that impede malaria RD
- Lack of a viable commercial market
- Costs
- Poor infrastructure
- Scientific hurdles
- The Result
- Old, cheap and accessible drugs are largely
useless in endemic regions due to drug resistance - Little progress in vaccine development
- Although malaria is preventable and curable,
- Over 3,000 children die of malaria every day.
4Quantum Leap in 5 years
- Through Public-Private Partnerships focused on
developing new products, improving the use of
existing tools, and building capacity to deliver
health care, - the gap is narrowing.
5Quantum Leap in 5 yearsProduct Development PPPs
- MMV has the largest-ever portfolio of
antimalarial drugs over 20 projects - 6 drug candidates are in late-stage clinical
studies - Delivery of at least 1 new drug before 2010
- MVI proved that a vaccine against a parasitic
disease is feasible - Largest study in children showed significant
efficacy in clinical malaria - A partially effective vaccine is foreseen by 2010
6MMVs mission is
7Its drugs should be Public Goods
- APPROPRIATE

- AFFORDABLE
- ACCESSIBLE

10 Malaria RD PPPs Aim
- Attributable Health Impact saving
malarias main victims is the bottom line for
which we are held accountable
11It is very hard to tell a mother that her child
died because the drugs we can afford in our
public health systems often dont work any more
we can only imagine the difference partnerships
like MMV might have made if they had started
their work 20 years ago " President Joachim
Chissano June 1st 2004 51,000 children die of
malaria each year in Mozambique
