National Standards
  • Development coordinated by LARSOA and CTC with
    input from across the cycle training sector
  • Move to a standards based approach to cycle
    training

Level 1
  • Level 1 is usually covered in a traffic free
    environment. By completing Level 1, you will be
    able to demonstrate the skills and understanding
    to be able to make a trip and undertake
    activities safely in a motor traffic free
    environment and as a pre-requisite to a road trip

Level 2
  • Level 2 is covered on quiet roads but with real
    traffic conditions. By completing Level 2 you
    will be able to demonstrate the skills and
    understanding to be able to make a trip safely to
    school, work or leisure on quiet roads

Level 3
  • Level 3 is covered on busy roads incorporating
    real traffic conditions and advanced road
    features. By completing Level 3 you will be able
    demonstrate the skills and understanding to be
    able to make a trip safely to school, work or
    leisure on busy roads and using complex junctions
    and road features

Cycling England Funding2005-2008
  • Total budget of 30m
  • 21m to be spent on youth projects
  • 1m on Instructor Capacity building
  • 1500 new instructors
  • Support and advice service
  • Up to 10 new Instructor Training Providers
  • 4.1m on direct funding for 100,000 additional
    cycle training places per year
  • 0.5m on additional unblocking initiatives
  • Remainder funding BikeIT, GoRide, Safe Routes to

    and schemes
  • 300,000 Year 6 children by 2008 (50 of total)

Notes
  • One instructor can deliver to 75 children each
    half term, that's 450 per year.
  • You usually need 2 instructors working together,
    so the minimum set up is for 900 children a year.
  • Someone has to do the administration.

  • Written confirmation of arrangements.
  • 'Roadworthy' cycle.
  • Helmets.
  • Consent form.

What can you do?
  • Currently around 50 of LAs are delivering
    National Standards
  • Enquire whether your LA is planning to adopt
    National Standards
  • Promote Bikeability to your LA and schools
  • Let them know about the support available
  • Encourage them to provide access to all
  • Lobby for introduction of Level 3 training in
    secondary schools
  • Become an Instructor
  • Set up your own cycle training company!
