Abstract The Galaxy Visualization system
embodies an approach to visualizing relationships
between large groups of documents. Each document
is represented as a star in the night sky. We
have applied our galaxy visualization strategy to
visualize relationships between lyrics of roughly
fifty Britney Spears songs. It allows users to
see what topics songs have in common and then
simplify the search by eliminating songs not in a
particular cluster and then recreating the
galaxy. Users can get brief summaries of what the
documents contain by hovering over top of them
with the mouse and they can view the complete
document simply by clicking on the star.
Relationships between documents and clusters are
easily identifiable because all documents and
cluster origins are arranged based on calculated
distance relations. The closer two items are to
each other, the more they have in common. Our
system allows a user to a gain a broad
understanding of the contents of the documents
database, and as the user selectively zooms, the
information is reorganizes itself in relation to
the focus of interest.
