EXPERIENCES RELATED TO THE APPLICATION OF GIS
  • Expert in use of Geographic Information System
for modelling hydrological aspects of land
degradation at basin and regional scale.
  • Expert in integration of multi-source data for
environmental analysis for regional studies using
    GIS.
  • Since 1995 GIS-consultant for the World
    Meteorological Organisation. Responsible of the
development of a Land System Analysis and a
Current System Analysis for the determination of
agricultural and pastoral risk zones of nine
countries, in the Sahel region, in the framework
    of Famine Early Warning System.
  • Scientific Coordinator of WMO IATA-RMTC
    Training course
  • Co-author of WEB page of WMO and Italian
    Co-operation projects
  • Author or co-author of numerous publications,
among which there are several papers on national
    et international refereed journals

3
  • The Institute of Agrometeorology and
Environmental Analysis for Agriculture is active
    in the field of
  • research, transfer of knowledge and training in
    advanced meteorology, climatology and
    applications to land management, agriculture,
forestry, health, transport and urban planning
  • To achieve these goals, up to date and innovative
techniques of measurements are used in
    micrometeorology, eco-physiology, earth
    observation from the space, geographic
    information, system analysis and modelling.

4
  • IATA - ACTIVITIES deal with remote sensing,
    environmental monitoring, data processing, image
    processing, modelling, and simulations.
    Specifically
  • Research on global change
  • Climatic change on temperature and precipitation
    distributions, desertification
  • Sea-level observation systems
  • Climatic and meteorological impact on
    agriculture, water resources, coastal zones
    biological species
  • Severe hydro-meteorological events
  • Desertification
  • Desertification information system for the
    Mediterranean (UNCCD-EEA)
  • Vulnerability assessment in arid zones

5
  • Technological innovation
  • Weather radar systems (satellites and rain
gauges data fusion, weather radar network)
  • Atmospheric sounding systems (radar wind
profiler analysis, RASS and sodar data
    processing, microwaves radiometer application
collaboration with many Italian regional agencies
    and EU)
  • Satellite remote sensing (technological analysis
    of space-borne sensor neuronal data)
  • Data processing
  • Climatic data spatialisation and classification,
image processing, data fusion techniques computer
    graphic and meteorological applications,
    Geographical Information System data management.

6
  • The IATA- CNR is connected to others scientific
    institutions of Florence
  • The Applied Meteorology Foundation (FMA),
    Florence
  • The Centre of Application of Computer Science
in Agriculture of the Georgofili Academy,
    Florence
  • The Laboratory for Meteorology and
Environmental Modelling of the Tuscany Region.
  • The Department of Agronomic Science and
Agro-Forestry Land Management of the University
    of Florence.
