  • Gifted and talented children are those who by
    virtue of their outstanding abilities are capable
    of high performance. These are children whose
    potentialities require differentiated education
    programs and/or services beyond those normally
    performance include those with demonstrated
    achievement or potential ability in any of the
    following areas, individually or in combination
    general intellectual ability, specific academic
    aptitude, creative or productive thinking,
    leadership ability, visual and performing arts.

  • 1) Gifted child means a school-age person as
    defined in Sec. 22-1-2U NMSA 1978 whose
    intellectual ability paired with subject matter
    aptitude/achievement, creativity/divergent
    thinking, or problem-solving/critical thinking is
    so outstanding that a properly constituted IEP
    team decides special education services are
    required to meet the childs educational needs.

  • As used in this chapter, the term highly capable
    student shall mean a student who has been
    assessed to have superior intellectual ability as
    demonstrated by one or more of the multiple
    criteria in WAC 392-170-040.

    amounts of information, relate one idea to
    another, make sound judgments, solve problems by
    reframing the question and creating novel
    solutions (Heward)

Down Side
  • Student may dominate discussions, be impatient
    from one activity to the next, may want to read
    instead of be physically active or social, lead
    discussions off the topic, become bored by
    repetitions, and could quickly lose interest.
