Title: Discipleship Lesson 4 The Holy Spirit

1
Discipleship Lesson 4The Holy Spirit
  • What Are the Functions and Attributes of the
    Holy Spirit in My Life?

2
  • Introduction The day you received the Lord Jesus
Christ as your personal Savior, the Holy Spirit
took up permanent residency inside your body.
This third person of the trinity is perhaps the
most misunderstood and ignored part of a
    Christians relationship with God

3
  • The purpose of this lesson is to give the
individual a basic understanding of whom the Holy
Spirit of God is and what He does in his life.

4
  • Where do I find the Holy Spirit?

5
  • The Holy Spirit of God lives on this earth inside
your body if you are saved. He came in at the
moment of salvation and took up permanent
residency. Every believer is indwelled by the
Holy Spirit in the same manner.

  • What is the function of the Holy Spirit?

8
  • The Holy Spirit convicts of sin. John 168-9
says, And when he is come he will reprove the
world of sin, and of righteousness, and of
judgment Of sin, because they believe not on me.

9
  • In the lost, he convicts of sin to
  • bring them to salvation.

10
  • In the saved, he convicts of sin to keep them
clean and show them how to live for Jesus Christ

11
  • You must understand the difference between
    conviction and guilt.

12
  • Conviction is God pointing out that something is
wrong so you can make it right. Isaiah 118
    says,

14
  • Guilt is often the devil accusing you of being
    unworthy to receive Gods blessings.
  • NOTE However, guilt is not always bad.
  • Healthy guilt can be the result of a sensitive
    conscious.
  • False guilt is what satan tries to use to defeat
    us.

15
  • The Holy Spirit creates and regenerates.
  • Regenerate - To create anew

16
  • The Holy Spirit is active in creation. Gen 12
    Job 334
  • Job 334
  • The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of

  • In Jesus Christ, you are a new creature
(regenerated or made anew), born again by the
    Holy Spirit. John 33-8

Regenerate
19
  • John 35-8
  • Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily,
I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he
cannot see the kingdom of God.
  • Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born
when he is old? can he enter the second time into
his mother's womb, and be born?

20
  • Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the
Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
  • That which is born of the flesh is flesh and
that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Water Birth
Spiritual Birth
21
  • Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born
    again.
  • The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou
hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell
whence it cometh, and whither it goeth so is
every one that is born of the Spirit.

    praise of his glory.

us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

  • The Spirit itself beareth witness with our
spirit, that we are the children of God

25
  • The Holy Spirit teaches you the Bible
  • John 1426
  • But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in my name, he shall
teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto
    you.

26
  • John 1613-15
  • Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he
will guide you into all truth for he shall not
speak of himself but whatsoever he shall hear,
that shall he speak and he will shew you
    things to come.
  • He shall glorify me for he shall receive of
mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things
that the Father hath are mine therefore said I,
that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it
    unto you.
  • I Corinthians 29-10
  • But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear
heard, neither have entered into the heart of
man, the things which God hath prepared for them
    that love him.
  • But God hath revealed them unto us by his
Spirit for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea,
    the deep things of God.

27
  • The Holy Spirit intercedes in prayer for you.
  • Romans 826-27
  • Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities
for we know not what we should pray for as we
ought but the Spirit itself maketh intercession
for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
  • And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what
is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh
intercession for the saints according to the
    will of God.

32
  • The Holy Spirit of God produces a set of
character qualities as you give your life to him
    and walk in His power.

33
  • This set of character qualities is called the
fruit (singular) of the Spirit in Galatians
    522-23.

34
  • It is singular because ALL of the qualities are
produced at the same time by a close relationship
    with the Holy Spirit.

36
  • Basic Questions

37
  • What is my being filled with the Spirit and how
    can I accomplish this?

38
  • Comparing Ephesians 518-19 and Colossians 316
shows that investing your life in the Word of God
and letting it dwell in your heart will produce
the same results in your life as being filled
    with the Spirit.

39
  • Ephesians 518-19
  • And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess
but be filled with the Spirit

40

41
  • The more you saturate your mind with the Word of
God, the closer your relationship to the Holy
    Spirit will be

42
  • Simply WALK in the Spirit. Walking is a steady,
    consistent, natural process of growth.
  • Galatians 516-18
  • This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye
shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
  • For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the
Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary
the one to the other so that ye cannot do the
    things that ye would.
  • But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under
    the law.

44
  • Allow God to control your life by consciously and
    regularly yielding to Him.
  • The filling of the Holy Spirit is NOT you getting
    more of the Holy Spirit.
  • It is the Holy Spirit getting more of you.

45
  • BE PATIENT, PERSISTENT AND CONSISTENT. Being
consistently controlled by he Holy Spirit does
    not happen overnight
  • It is a lifelong process of spiritual growth.
