FERPA

• Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
• Keeps your educational records private (including
  from your parents) unless you sign a waiver
• Whats covered under FERPA?

PARENTS

• Our primary contact is the student.
• We remind students of their FERPA rights when we
  meet with them.
• If they choose to waive those rights at that time
  we can talk with you in detail.
• Without a waiver we can only talk with you about
  our policies and procedures.

Parental Notification

• A sanction that can be imposed when a student has
  a drug or alcohol offense.
• This does not violate FERPA because in those
  cases it may be in the students best interest to
  notify the parents/guardians

• Learn about the judicial process
• Hear cases dealing with alleged violations of the
  Code of Student Conduct
• Great opportunity for peer education
• Make new friends!

Campus E-mail

• Policy 93
• It is the students responsibility to check
  his/her campus e-mail regularly.
• We would suggest at least a few times per week.

Student Judicial Action Hold

• Prevents transactions for the following
  processes
• Registration
• Transcripts
• Withdrawal
• Graduation

• Prevent the hold
• Comply with university officials
• Engage in the student judicial process do not
  evade (i.e. return calls, e-mails, etc.)
• Complete your sanctions

Scope of the Code

• Students are students regardless of where they
  are
• The Code of Conduct WILL be enforced on campus
  and MAY BE enforced off campus

  separate.

• At times they overlap other times they dont.

• Any violation of this policy could result in
  suspension or expulsion from the university and
  UNC system.

• Suspension from WCU campus specific
• Expulsion from WCU expulsion from all campuses
  in the UNC system
• This database is one response to the murders that
  took place at UNC-Wilmington in 2004

Illegal Downloading/File Sharing

• Limewire, AresWarez, Kazaa, Bear Share, etc
• Just because you can pay for these services does
  NOT mean they are LEGAL.
• If you are illegally downloading or sharing
  music, movies or games your internet will be SHUT
  OFF until you go through the student conduct
  process.

Prohibited Conduct

• Acts of dishonesty (including academic)
• Physical/verbal abuse, threats, intimidation,
  etc.
• Vandalism and Theft
• Hazing
• Failure to comply with the directions of a
  university official
• Violation of any rule or regulation or policy
  (including academic and residential)

• Violation of federal, state, or local law on
  university premises or at university sponsored
  events
• Drugs and drug paraphernalia
• Illegal, unsafe, or irresponsible use of alcohol
• Firearms, fireworks, explosives, hunting knives,
  and other dangerous items
• Conduct which is disorderly, lewd, or indecent
  breach of peace

Prohibited Conduct

• Violation of fire safety (i.e. failing to
  evacuate during a fire drill, intentional
  sounding of the alarm, etc.)
• Illegal Downloading
• Aiding or abetting any prohibited conduct
• Sexual misconduct (assault or harassment)
• Violation of the Code by ones non-WCU guest

• ALL games of rapid consumption/binge
  drinking/common source containers are a violation
  of the alcohol policy regardless of age
• Beer Pong
• Circle of Death or other card games (you know
  what were talking about)
• Quarters
• Flip Cup
• Keg stands
• Etc.

Illegal Drug Use

• This includes
• illegal drugs,
• prescription drugs that are not prescribed to
  you,
• AND taking your prescription drugs any other way
  than prescribed.

• ...etc.
• REMINDER these are PUBLIC sites professors,
  parents, and employers may have profiles on these
  sites.
• If we are made aware of a violation via one of
  these sites we may act on it.

• The biggest educational challenge we face
  revolves around developing character, conscience,
  citizenship, tolerance, civility, and individual
  and social responsibility in our students. We
  dare not ignore this obligation in a society that
  sometimes gives the impression that virtues such
  as these are discretionary. These should be a
  part of the standard equipment of our graduates,
  not options.
