Title: Organization of Deviance

1
Organization of Deviance
  • The relations between deviants vary in
    complexity, coordination, and purposiveness.
  • Deviant groups also vary in terms of their size,
the stratification of their members, and the
amount of authority held by the leader or
    leaders.

2
Types of Deviant Groups
  • Some groups are flexible and loose (such as
groups or activities for sexual deviance or being
    a regular in a bar)
  • Some are rigid with access only granted or earned
(gangs, biker clubs, a stolen goods network of
    fencing).
  • Oftentimes, those groups with rigid boundaries
have some sort of ritual that not only allows the
potential member access into the group, but can
also set up their place in the pecking order
    once a member.

3
Social Structure of Groups
  • The more tightly nit the group, or the deeper the
group withdraws into its own social and economic
world, the more they will develop rules and
guidelines to govern the behavior of the members
outside of the norms of society.
  • Deviant groups pass on the norms and values of
their subculture, teaching new members how to
live within the group and what their function is.

4
Common Denominator of Social Commonness
  • Oftentimes within a subculture, there appears
some common denominator of social commonness, for
instanceoutlaw biker gang members are generally
    from similar socio-economic backgrounds.
Fraternities often contain members from the same
    socio-economic background. Members of particular
sexual deviations may be similar in
socio-economic backgrounds (business men who like
to be dominated) or children of similar
particular parental styles (abuse may contribute
    to sadistic or masochistic tendencies

5
Individual Organization of Deviance
  • Sexual asphyxia involves members that are
solitary, young middle to upper-middle class
backgrounds, who also may lean towards
homosexuality (although this may stem from not
finding partners of the opposite sex willing to
participate), who may be involved with bondage
practices (again to find willing partners), and
there is often some level of transvestitism
    associated with the participants act.

6
Sexual Asphyxia cont.
  • - The act itself is difficult to research because
of the secretive nature of the act.
  • -  Research is generally done through those who
    have unwittingly killed themselves.
  • There is generally no contact, let alone support
groups for this type of act because of its
    secretive nature.

Self-Injurers
Johnny Depp There were many years I was
feeling at a loss about my life or how I grew up.
I couldn't understand what is right or what is
precious. At that time, I was so miserable and
self-defeating. Angelina Jolie - "thinking about
not wanting to be around. It was when the reality
of life set in, the reality of surviving."
"You're young, you're crazy, you're in bed and
you've got knives. So shit happens." Courtney
Love - "I have many self-destructive bones, and
I've broken a bunch. I think self-destructiveness
is given a really bad rap. I think that
self-destructiveness can also mean
self-reflection, can mean poetic sensibility, it
can mean empathy, it can mean a hedonism and a
libertarianism and a lack of judgment."

Self-injury, self-mutilation or Deliberate
Self-Harm syndrome by definition is the
intentional harming oneself. Some people think
that the self-injurer is trying to commit suicide
or even call out for attention or help. But in
fact it is not like that at all. Hurting ones
self with a known intention, cutting, burning,
hitting, etc. is considered self injury.
Tattooing and piercing are also mild forms of
self injury and may be a way of self inflicting
pain, but this sort of self injury is more along
the lines of a desired effect The person focuses
on the self inflicted pain instead of the pain
that they may feel inside from the hurt of life
or others.
9
Some researchers have broken self-mutilation into
three different types there is the most common,
which is superficial (cutting, pulling hair,
burning, etc) stereo typical (head banging,
poking and prying at body, etc.) and the most
rare and intense is Major (which may consist of
purposeful deformity of a body part) People who
usually self-harm or self injure are not
necessarily suicidal or even want to die. Some
self-injurers are perfectionists and may not be
able to handle their feelings, the way the look,
or how they think.  These people usually self
injure because of sever depression or trauma that
has come into their lives and that they find
incredibly difficult to cope with.
