- Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the
western hemisphere with an extraordinarily
unequal distribution of income and 53 of its
population below poverty line.
4Children in Honduras Almost half the population
in Honduras is children latest statistics speak
of a percentage of 42 being below 14 years of
age. 65 of these children live and grow under
poor and even disastrous conditions facing much
danger, heartache and abuse every day. These are
children forced into sexual exploitation, caught
up in gang violence, infected with AIDS, orphaned
by violence and drug addictions, starving in
extreme poverty and getting little or none
education whatsoever. The children of Honduras
are at great risk, the statistics are alarming
and appalling. Prompt, responsible and
compassionate action is needed and much support
and prayer is required from the Christian
community at large.
5ORPHANAGE EMMANUEL When David Lydia Martinez
were given a vision from God, showing them that
His hearts desire was for them to provide for
abandoned and unwanted children, they sold
everything they owned and moved to Honduras to
follow the Lords calling on their lives. This
happened at christmas in the year of 1989. They
founded Orphanage Emmanuel in Honduras, for the
Lord and Savior to be exalted and for His
childrens care. By the grace of God and His
ability to touch the hearts of many people
throughout the United States and Europe,
Orphanage Emmanuel houses and cares for hundreds
of unwanted, abandoned, and abused children of
all ages. Through Gods love and compassion for
these children a loving home and refuge has been
provided for them.
6The Children at Emmanuel Most of the children at
Orphanage Emmanuel have been mentally, physically
or sexually abused before arriving here. They
come from poor, dysfunctional families. Most of
the children come from family structures with 4-8
siblings likely with different fathers. The
children are from poor marginalized urban areas
of the larger cities or remote and poor rural
villages.
7Due to this often chaotic background with lack of
adult authority, healthy stimulation and
sufficient nutrition we strive to create safe and
predictable surroundings with everyday routines
and structures. This helps the children to feel
safe and develop responsibility for themselves
and others. Once a child arrives at Emmanuel,
we joyfully assume responsibility for their care
- including nutritional food, comfortable and
clean clothing and living quarters, as well as
educational, medical, and general developmental
needs. Most importantly, we strive to give the
children the strong spiritual guidance that will
transform their hearts and minds and help them
put the past behind them and find hope in the
present and the future.
8Our vision is that that the children will
re-enter the Honduran society as contributing
citizens being an example, light and testimony to
their fellow Hondurans. Emmanuel is recognized
by the Honduran Governmental Family Institute
(IHNFA) and all the children are given into our
care by the Honduran Government through a court
order from the Childrens Judge Office. We are
periodically inspected by the Honduran
authorities who express great contentment with
our home.
9The beautiful setting of the orphanage includes
mountains, fresh air, and plentiful space in
which the children grow both physically and
spiritually. It is located about 70 miles
northeast of the capital city of Tegucigalpa. The
Lord has been faithful to provide for its needs.
Facilities include the church, homes for the
children, staff, and volunteers, dining halls, a
laundry facility, warehouse, bakery, gymnasium,
medical and dental clinic.
10Sponsor Program The cost to sponsor an individual
child is US 35.00 per month. Sponsorship funds
form the foundation for covering the costs of
operating Emmanuel. Also important is the
opportunity for a sponsor to be involved in the
life of an individual child. Sponsors are
encouraged to correspond with their children and,
if possible, come to Emmanuel as part of a
mission team or as a volunteer. Emmanuel is also
supported by churches and individuals especially
in the States, but also Denmark who gather
donated articles and ship them here on containers
regularly. A special effort was made by Danish
supporters and 2 containers have come from
Denmark with goods for the children and equipment.
11Volunteer Program With very few full-time staff,
much of the work at Emmanuel is done by
volunteers. Individuals may serve as either
short-term or long-term volunteers. Groups with
as many as forty people may come to provide
short-term assistance or to work on a specific
project. Couples considering full-time ministry
work should contact Emmanuel directly to discuss
internship opportunities.
12Skill Training for the Boys Girls In addition
to the school education, the boys and girls have
a variety of opportunities in vocational
training. For example, the boys have
opportunities on the areas of woodworking,
mechanics, construction and computers. The girls
have other opportunities to learn more about
cooking, baking, sewing, and secretarial and
typing skills in the computer lab. Also, the
girls help with many odd jobs and in the daily
care of the younger children.
13The Farm Our farm was initiated in 2003 with a
small poultry project. The idea in opening a
farm on the grounds were, on one hand to gain a
certain self- sustainability on certain products
and on the other hand create a training
environment for our older boys. Today the farm
consists of poultry facilities, pig barn, plant
school, fields for cultivating and the most
recent addition, the therapeutic Horsemanship
program for both boys and girls. We are planning
a dairy project To begin later this year.
Approximately 55 boys are skill trained on the
farm and Another 40 children in the horse program.
