In London there are so many things to see and
do. Here are but a few.
Big Ben Houses of Parliament
4Big Ben
- The Houses of Parliament that stand
- today were built between 1840 and
- They consist of The House of
- Commons and The House of Lords.
- The members of The Lords are not
- elected and are not involved in
- taxation and finance.
The Clock tower is 320 feet high and most think
that the name Big Ben comes from Sir Benjamin
Hall who was Commissioner of Works and involved
in the project. He was a big man. The bell
weighs over 3 tons.
5Tower of London
The Tower was constructed around 1078 and has
housed the Crown Jewels for the past 600 years.
It is most famous as a prison, but it has been a
royal residence and palace, treasury, fortress,
library, arsenal factory and execution site.
Prisoners entered the Tower through Traitors
Gate.
Traitor's Gate
6Westminster Abbey
Over 3000 people are either buried or
memorialized here. All but two British monarchs
have been crowned here. It is still a church
with regular worship services.

Four sculptures at the bases of the four
pillars. On Bastille Day, July 14, a mili- tary
parade down the Champs Elysees begins here.
Beneath the Arc Is the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier and eternal flame commemorating the dead
of 2 world wars.

The Louvre is home to many great works of art.
Above are four of these works. From left to
rightVenus de Milo 100 BC, Winged Victory of
Sarmothrace 190 BC, Mummy covering 800 BC, and
the Mona Lisa. The idea of a museum originated
with Louis XVI and opened Aug 10, 1793.

stone slab. It is the geographical center of

Vatican City is entirely within the city of Rome.
It includes St. Peters church, St. Peters
Square, the Vatican Palace, and the Vatican
Gardens. The Popes residence is to the right of
St. Peters in the Vatican Palace.
