• - Stricken with polio in 1921, his
• legs became totally paralyzed
• - He pledged to make a new deal
• for the American People
• -Confident and charming
• - Promised to help the jobless, poor farmers,
  and elderly
• -Calls for action!

• This great nation will endure as it has
  endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first
  of all, let me assert my firm belief that the
  only thing we have to fear is fear itself
  nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which
  paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into
  advance.

1st Challenge Fix the crumbling bank system

• Remember 5,000 banks closed during the
  depression but some were still open.
• Bank Holiday
• -FDR closed every bank in the country
• for 4 days in order to make them more secure
• - Only banks with enough funds to meet
  depositors demands would reopen
• - FDR encouraged people to place their money
  back in the banks
