ARBOR DAY

A CELEBRATION OF STEWARDSHIP
  • Stewardship means taking care of our
environment and natural resources. The future of
tree-shaded streets and parks, clean water,
productive farms and bountiful forests depends
upon each of us playing our part as good stewards.

3
TREES ARE IMPORTANT
  • Trees They hold up the mountains. They cushion
the rain storms. They discipline the rivers.
They control the floods. They break the winds.
    They foster the birds.
  • John Stewart Collis

HISTORY OF ARBOR DAY
  • The idea of Arbor Day originally came from
Nebraska. Among the pioneers moving into the
Nebraska Territory in 1854 was J. Sterling
Morton. Morton was a journalist and editor. He
advocated tree planting in his articles and
    editorials.

8
  • On January 4, 1872, Morton first proposed a
tree-planting holiday to be called Arbor Day.
In 1885, Arbor Day was named a legal holiday in
    Nebraska.
  • During the 1870s other states passed
legislation to observe Labor Day, and the
tradition began in schools in 1882.

9
  • Other holidays repose upon the past Arbor Day
    proposes for the future.
  • J. Sterling Morton
