STAGES OF GENOCIDE
  • Genocide develops in eight stages that are
    predictable but not inexorable.

10
Eight Stages of Genocide
  • Classification
  • Symbolization
  • Dehuminization
  • Organization
  • Polarization
  • Preparation
  • Extermination
  • Denial

11
  • Symbolization
  • We name people, distinguish them by colors or
dress and apply them to members of groups.

12
  • Dehuminization
  • One group denies the humanity of the other group.
Members are equated with the animals, vermin,
    insects or diseases.

13
  • Organization
  • Genocide is always organized, usually by the
state, though sometimes informally by terrorist
groups. Plans are made for genocide killings.

14
  • Polarization
  • Extremists drive the groups apart. Hate groups
    broadcast polarizing propoganda. Extremist
    terrorism targets moderates, intimidating and
    silencing the center.

15
  • Preperation
  • Victims are identified and separated out because
of their ethnic or religious identity. Death
    lists are drawn up.

16
  • Extermination
  • Extermination begins, and quickly becomes mass
killing legally called genocide. It is
    extermination, because killers dont believe
    their victims are fully human.

17
  • Denial
  • The perpetrators of genocide dig up the mass
graves, burn the bodies, try to cover up the
    evidence and intimidate the witnesses.

18
  • They deny that they committed any crimes, block
investigations, and continue to govern until
    driven from power.

19
Famous Genocides

  • Cambodian
  • Holocaust
