Title: Isaiah 53:311 ESV
1(No Transcript)
2Isaiah 533-11 (ESV) He was despised and rejected
by men a man of sorrows, and acquainted with
grief and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely
he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows
yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and
afflicted.
3But he was wounded for our transgressions he was
crushed for our iniquities upon him was the
chastisement that brought us peace, and with his
stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have
gone astray we have turned every one to his own
way and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of
us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth like a lamb that is
led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that
before its shearers is silent, so he opened not
his mouth...
4Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him he
has put him to grief when his soul makes an
offering for sin, he shall see his offspring he
shall prolong his days the will of the LORD
shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of
his soul he shall see and be satisfied by his
knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall
bear their iniquities. Thanks be to God for
His indescribable gift! (2 Cor. 915)

6Respecting The
Authority of God
April 30, 2006 AM
7Imagine life without any law enforcement or
where no one respected their authority...
8Imagine if we had no standard of currency if
each person decided for themselves the value of
each denomination of currency...
9Imagine if a judge or jury issued a sentence no
one enforced it one might say, Thats just your
opinion
10Imagine if grades were arbitrary, discipline
impossible, and students have equal say as
teachers...
F
11Imagine if parents could not control their
children the children argue with their parents,
debate their parents...
refuse to obey their parents, and the children
are treated as if they have equal say as their
parents.
12Importance Of Respecting Gods Authority
- Jewish leaders understood its importance
- They asked Jesus By what authority do You do
these things? (Mt 2123-27) - How might people today answer that question?
- What does authority mean? Why do you ask?
- I just do what I want to do! I do what feels
right to me! - I do whats right for me you do whats right
for you! Just as long as we believe in Jesus
were okay! - Every person acts by some authority the
question is whose is it? (Mt. 2818 Jn 1027
Col 118)
13Importance Of Respecting Gods Authority
- Respect for authority is vital for salvation
- Jesus said some would be lost because they acted
lawlessly, without law (Mt 721-23) - If we transgress, go beyond, Gods law we cannot
have fellowship with Him! (2 Jn 9-11) - Necessary for achieving religious unity
- Denominationalism is a problem! (Jn 1721-22)
- Local churches in the NT existed without being
part of any denomination (1 Cor 110) - We can only achieve this level of unity by
appealing to the same standard! (I Peter 411)
14Authority Can Be Established By Direct Commands
- How authority was established (2 Tim 316-17)
- 3 Ways Commands, examples, inferences
- If a work is good I can find its approval in
Gods word, if its not approved its not
good! - Direct Command A direct statement requiring a
person to do or not to do something - May be a Thou Shalt or a Thou Shalt Not
- May be a simple instruction of how to live or do
something
15Authority Can Be Established By Direct Commands
- Direct Commands In Our Personal Lives
- Most commands in the Bible are not for the
collective work of the church, but for our
daily lives! - Willful sin boils down to a rejection of Gods
way thus His authority (Jer. 1023 Prov.
1412) - Commands for families (Eph 522ff 61-4 I Tim
516) - Commands for morality (Col 35 Eph 53 I Pet
43) - Commands for my relationships with brethren
the world (Mt. 544 615 1815-18) - For my salvation (Acts 1730 Rom 109 Acts
238)
16Authority Can Be Established By Direct Commands
- Direct Commands In Relation To The Church
- Personal commands (Heb 1024-25 Phil. 25 etc)
- Collective commands
- Corinth Galatia to take collection (1 Cor
161-2) - Sing psalms, hymns, spiritual songs together
(Eph 519) - Corinth told to withdraw from the unrepentant (1
Cor 5) - Observe the L.S. till Jesus returns (1 Cor.
1124-25) - Many things we practice as a church do not come
by command but through approved examples - When God gives a command, respecting His
authority means doing it His way! (Col 317)
17CONCLUSION
- Gods authority is something we must seek and
follow Our response carries eternal
consequences! (2 Thess. 18) - Respecting authority is not just about the work
of the church, but my daily personal life! - Do I respond to Gods commands in obedience or
do I simply do my own thing?
18Jesus Invites You To Come!
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
(Mt. 1128-30)
