Background Information on Film
  • Beauty and the Beast was an animated film made in
    1991!
  • The movie was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk
    Wise.
  • Also, the film was a Disney production.

3
Summary of the Story
  • Maurice was captured by the Beast and was being
held prisoner. Belle came to save him and
sacrificed herself to do so. She then became a
prisoner and lived with the Beast. At first Belle
is terrified of Beast, but slowly and surely they
became good friends and eventually fell in love.

4
Belle The Hero
  • Belle was the main hero in Beauty and the Beast.
She saved Beast from being a monster on the
outside for the rest of his life. However, she
also relieves her father from a life in prison.

5
Departure
  • The Call- Belle finds her fathers horse,
Philippe, without her father. She then follows
the horse back to the castle, where Maurice is
    being held prisoner

6
Departure
  • Crossing the Threshold- Belle decides to take her
fathers place as the Beasts prisoner. She
promises to stay in the castle and never see here
father again in exchange for his freedom .

7
Fulfillment
  • Challenges- In the film, Belle faces many
challenges. She has to deal with the Beast and
his archaic behavior. However she also has to
deal with the townsmen and their criticism of her
    family in the beginning
  • Abyss- The abyss in this movie is after Gaston
and Beast fought and the Beast was stabbed. Belle
thought that Beast had died and began to cry. She
    then lost all hope.

8
Return
  • Resurrection- In the final scene when the Beast
is dying and Belle says she loves him is the
resurrection. It shows that Belle has learned to
love and look beyond appearance and first
    impression.

9
Return
  • Magical Gift or Element- The magical element in
the end of the movie was when all the servants
and Beast returned to their human form. Also, the
enchanted rose that kept the countdown of time
for Beast was magical. Belle was not aware of
the curse put on the castle or the rose so the
    magic took her by surprise.

10
Archetypal Characters
  • Mentor- Mrs. Potts and the wardrobe help and
advise Belle in many decisions while staying in
the castle. Also, Mrs. Potts, Lumiere and
Cogsworth give advise to Beast about how to court
    and treat Belle.

11
Archetypal Character
  • Threshold Guardian- In one scene of the movie the
wolves act as the threshold guardians by being
very territorial over their woods. Also, in
another sequence of the film the Beast is a
guardian over the west wing of his castle.

12
Archetypal Characters
  • Shadow- The Beast is the shadow some instances.
He starts out as a cruel creature with a mean
attitude. The animators used a low angle when
Belle looks up at the Beast in horror. Then you
see that when he falls for Belle his shadow is
    gentle and sweet.

13
Film Terminology
  • Long Shot- In the film, the animators used long
shot to transition form one setting to another.
In our film, long shot is used so you can get the
whole feel and essence of the castle.
  • Low Angle- The animators used a low angle shot
when Belle looks up at the Beast in horror. It
gives the viewer a sense that the Beast is scary.
  • High Angle- High Angle was used in Beauty and
the Beast when Lumiere and the other servants
spying on Belle and Beast. It shows the servants
looking down at them from a window.

14
Values
  • Values in a society are revealed through films.
In Beauty and the Beast, the values of the French
society are revealed through the heroin's
characteristics. Belle was wise, beautiful, and
caring. These qualities are just some of the few
that are revealed. Belle likes to read! This says
that the French value studies and knowledge. When
Belle helps Beast with his injury, the action is
saying that the culture values helping and caring
for others. Therefore values can be expressed
    through films.
