I quit building guitars along about the time my
wife died in 2013. I managed to finish 173
of those devils. I inlaid a one-of-a-kind rosette
around the sound hole for each, rather than buy
one of the unbelievably beautiful ones available
from catalogs. One hundred and seventy- three
rosettes at about six or seven hours each . . .
too big a chunk of my life dedicated to
something totally USELESS! As a matter of fact,
you could argue that a rosette on a guitar
actually degrades its tone quality by damping
the vibration of the soundboard. Long
established custom, however, trumps performance
a classical guitar simply has a rosette. Never
mind why.
