How did you respond?
How can mobile technologies benefit WBL?
9
How are mobile technologies used by Work-Based
Learners?
To communicate with peers, tutors and
assessors To collect video, audio and
photographic evidence for portfolios To assess
portfolio evidence and provide feedback (tutors
and assessors) To gain access to learning content
through the VLE/internet To provide additional
resources/instruction materials through video
recordings As an aid to completing written work
using internet access and generic software

11
But does it work?
12
Learners said...
  • They perceived their progress improved
  • Believe mobile devices helped them to achieve
    learning goals
  • Say mobile devices more convenient in the
    workplace
  • Report feeling more valued and better supported

13
Teachers/Assessors said...
  • Improved progress or speed of progress
  • Better quality of coursework
  • Learners more engaged/motivated/
  • Focussed/better behaved
  • Improved learner confidence/self esteem/soft
    skills

14
Retention
  • predicted data suggest that the learners who
worked with the devices have all been retained,
and the retention and achievement for the group
will exceed the figures for the previous year.
    Accrington Rossendale

There is a marked improvement in retention for
the (ESOL) groupOverall, the use of mobile
technologies does appear to have been influential
in improving retention with the ESOL and pre-16
Motor Vehicle Lowestoft
15
Attendance
  • class attendance had definitely improved by
    10. This also compared favourably with the
other two course groups studying the same
qualification, but who werent using the PDAs.
    Lewisham
  • Attendance and retention data indicated
improvements for some learners involved in the
    projectIncreased motivation among learners has
    contributed positively to improved attendance
    Brockenhurst

16
Achievement
  • Achievement is predicted to rise significantly
by 7 in this academic year. Although it is hard
to prove a direct link between the MoLeNET
project and an improvement in achievement
anecdotal evidence suggests that this rise could
be due to both learners and tutors being very
much motivated by mobile learning technology
    Aylesbury

There were improvements in attendance and
attainment compared with previous years, and the
learners seemed genuinely more engaged. Matthew
Boulton
