Committee Indicators
Vital Activity will feature our grants, our
endowment funds, other charities and/or their
programs. Will also feature government programs
and ideas for individual actions. Vital Activity
will integrate Vital Signs into all aspects of
Foundation work and be featured in all our main
publications.

15Highlights
Over 60,000 people and with only 3 visible
minorities. However one third of males and one
quarter of females smoke. Both averages are
above the Alberta average and nearly 50 of 40
and 49 year olds are smokers. There is also
some significant increases in the rates of
obesity and diabetes in our regional area.

Good place to do business with only 3.7
bankruptcy. Home business on the increase.
Average hourly wage is increased from 18.78 in
2005 to 22.20 in 2007 Unemployment is below
national average but above the provincial average
(4.9). Employment growth is down and going in
the opposite direction to the rest of the
Province.

Good volunteers 53.2 of Hatters volunteer -
not including 2008 Alberta Summer Games.
Volunteers for the Salvation Army if paid the
average hourly wage are worth 15,817
annually. Recycling rates have doubled between 02
and 07 however landfill use has also dramatically
increased. Traffic crime is up 50 above
national average. Police have placed an emphasis
on drugs and impaired driving numbers are all
up. Increase in use of womens shelter crisis
line. Very low use of public transportation

High school non-completion rate is 27.9 well
above the national average. Lost our status as
the city with the lowest property rates in
Canada. Total cost of living has dropped in
comparison to other Alberta communities but not
in all aspects. Food more expensive than in
Edmonton
